Off the official site ;

Diarra became Gerard Houllier's first summer signing of 2002 when he signed a five year deal with the Reds but was only seen once in a red shirt since. That was in pre-season 2002 when he played 45 minutes at centre half in a pre-season friendly in Le Havre.

Even though its a pre-season friendly its still the first team isnt it? Looks like it could be Diarra after all.

I think I can solve this little mystery. As well as the 24 black players you've got listed we've also had a green, a white, a brown, two goldie's and for two games during the 1943-44 wartime league a player named Black. He even scored for us in a 5-1 win against Tranmere. Dont know his first name, but he's listed in Brian Pead's book "Liverpool A Complete Record". You never said we couldn't use books

Had the same question on RAWK about 6 months back and that's the list we came up with minus Pennant who hadn't yet joined. Had to remove Warner though as someone checked and he never played a competitive first team game for us so he joined Alou Diarra and Carl Medjani on the reserve list as they all only played friendlies.

The "wartime black" mentioned by l19red is Andy Black, a Scottish international who played for Hearts before the war and Man City and Stockport after.

There was a fella before ww2, he was a South African dont know what coloured skin he had though.

That's a great help isn't it.

The man you are thinking of is Berry Newenheys (not sure of the spelling). Although he may not count as black. He was what the South Africans referred to as "Cape coloured". Any cricket fans who remember Basil D'Olivera (England player from South Africa whose selection caused a tour to be cancelled in the late 60's or early 70's) will know what I mean.

If he's counted as black then he is the missing link.
