I always think of him as a finisher.  The truly great strikers could/can create stuff out of nothing; I don't think he ever could.

He had 73 assists which surprises me. But I don't remember him being involved like that.

he was brilliant for that season or so at Newcastle

He missed a lot of chances while at the mancs, lucky for him he got a hell of a lot of chances when at United, so his scoring record was probably okay/good over his old Trafford career

That’s my memory of him. He always seemed to score but he always seemed to miss about 3 guilt edge chances first before bundling in a scrappy one.

put him in any other team and he’d be Huckerby, Cademarterie or any other of the no marks that came through scored goals, got found out then fucked off.

edit: I’ve gone in too strong on that last line. He was better than them. But the Defoe, Ferdinand, Hasselbaink @RJ Fan club listed is about right. And interestingly, Yorke probably sits in that tier of the list too.

Double edit: it was @Lee909

I was behind the goal when he scored a hat trick against Liverpool at St James’s Park. It was blinking freezing.

At least one of those goals was later focused on as part of the match fixing trial involving Bruce Grobbelaar.

Slept in a student nurses room that night, in a place for student nurses. This memory trumps the football one from earlier in the day.

That was how I remembered him. However, I watched footage of a load of his goals a while back and he was far better than I recalled.

Take away Cole’s two years(-ish) at Newcastle, and his scoring record becomes a lot less extraordinary.
68 goals in 84 games for the Geordies - or a goal every 1.2 matches.

Over the rest of the his career it was 221 goals in 562 games or a goal every 2.5 games.
Basically his goalscoring dropped off a cliff once he went to Old Trafford. He had some seasons with a decent return, and won a fair few trophies, but perceptions of how good he was are all coloured by remembering a relatively short period of brilliance.
