The Godfather didn't see the creation of the genre. DW Griffiths made one of the first gangster films in 1913 with The Musketeers of Pig Alley. They were being made throughout the silent period but really took off as a genre in the thirties. If you haven't, check out The Public Enemy, the original Scarface and The Roaring Twenties.

The Roaring Twenties, now there's a movie. Bogarts quips are out of this world.

A film that upholds the the mythic West is always going to win out against one that depicts the flipside of the American dream, though.

Chorlton and the Big green Bastard know the score.

Mafia? I've shit 'em!

There's something about cockney gangsters in movie world that never convinces me. I think it's the way they sneer at everyone and seem to be complete sense of humour free zones. Compare Bob Hoskins in The Long Good Friday with Al Pacino in Carlito's Way, I was willing Charlie to fulfill his dream of getting to Barbados with Gail, whereas Bob Hoskins character Harold is a son even a mother couldn't love.

This thread has had me spending more money, I realised Goodfellas was not in my DVD collection and have just corrected the error by ordering it on Blue-Ray for £6.97 from Tesco.

Watched this again the other day.

Seriously underated and sensational film.

*even with the extremely annoying Sean Bean*

Most underrated gangster film. Suppose being released in the same year as Goodfellas didnt help.

How the flying fuck have I never heard of this?

*scratches head and looks for download*

The problem with that though is Benny Blanco.

Carlito is the changed man who wants out, his younger self was effectively Benny Blanco. Harold never has that life changing experience that carlito has.

Plus which is more ambitious? For me the long good friday has a political element that american film makes wouldn't touch till years after the event. It's also woven in brilliantly and as i said before the end sequence is immence. Don't get me wrong Carlito's way is exceptional. What makes Harold interesting is the relationships with his wife plus the fact he's been in power unapposed for so long he can't understand when the odds are too great.

I think it might be a generation thing. One of my sons loves Goodfellas but I wouldnt even have it in my top 10 gangster films.

I'd put casino well above goodfellas and maybe even a Bronx Tale above Goodfellas.

The Godfather and 2 are the well erm Godfathers of all gangster films.

State Of Grace would be in my top five for sure. My posting of the box office was to show just how overlooked it was at the time of it's release.

sorry dude, reading stuff into it.

Also has Get Carter been given a mention yet?

Also who's seen the hit and the limey, both odd films but also interesting ones.

Mafia films and the Mafia itself will always attract more interest and mystique than just basic gangster shit though.

Agreed, whilst the Long Good Friday may be a good film, it isn't in the same league as The Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino etc... if we are talking English films, I prefer the original Get Carter to it myself. Though I must admit, the ending of it is class.

Any excuse to post this clip ( again ) but this from A Bronx Tale is one of my best ever scenes, superb.

Get posting your favourite clips up.

Edit : Just beat me to it Chorlton with Get Carter! The Limey is a good movie, Terence Stamp is great in it.
