Rafa Benitez today admitted he made mistakes but promised to lead Liverpool FC to Europa League semi-finals

RAFA BENITEZ today admitted he has made mistakes this season – but has promised to atone by leading Liverpool into the Europa League semi-finals.

The Reds’ boss has been under scrutiny prior to tonight’s clash with Benfica, mainly due to his decision to substitute Fernando Torres at Birmingham City on Sunday.

Benitez maintains that was still the right decision – Torres was struggling with exhaustion and a knee problem – but has accepted he has erred in other areas, such as tactics and squad investment.

However, he is anxious not to dwell on the negatives and is determined to concoct a winning formula tonight, as the Reds aim to overhaul a first leg 2-1 deficit and blow Benfica away at Anfield.

“If a big club like Liverpool depends on one substitution, then I think something is wrong – we have to concentrate on the game,” said Benitez.

“Everybody can mistakes but the big picture remains the same. The future of the club is more than just one substitution.

“I have made mistakes, like everyone. Big mistakes? Sometimes. I think every manager is always making mistakes. The difference is being able to manage as a club.

“I will not say which team but they signed four wingers for £10m, £15m, £20m and they have had a player who has not played for them all season.

“We signed one player, for example, that has had problems during the season and we cannot manage, so it seems we are short. That means we have to do something.”

The key, however, to ‘doing something’ lies in investment; Torres said in an interview yesterday that Liverpool paid the price for failing to make key signings last summer and Benitez agrees.

But how the financial deadlock will be broken remains to be seen; the Rhone Group are still waiting to discover whether their £113m bid for a 40 per cent stake in the club will be accepted and another unnamed group are also looking.

“I don’t want to say too much because we have to concentrate on the game but I totally agree with Fernando – we have to invest if we want to move forward,” said Benitez.

“We need investors, we need money because the market is very expensive. We want to go one step forward and that is the most difficult step.

“We have to invest because we cannot make any mistakes. For us, it is not easy. But the players are working very hard and we have to stick together to try and progress.

“We have been in the Champions League for the past six years and, thanks to this, the club still has the big name that it has in the past.

“We have brought in a lot of money playing in Europe and we want to be there; if we are there again, it will be easier for an investor to see the club as an opportunity.”

Benitez is toying with the idea of playing three central defenders tonight.

Well at least he admits he is making mistakes.

Sounds to me he has taken us as far as he can, without money and we don't have money - therefore we need a manager who can get our players performing to the level they should be.

Strange how you always see your arse when presented with logical argument

Logical?

What, like judging a team and it's respective quality solely on how much has been spent in the last two years and categorically ignoring all the personnel and potential that was already there?

You're an idiot.

Just heard a BBC radio interview - he was interviewed by Juliette Ferrington who persistently tried to put words like 'regrettable' and 'big mistakes' in his mouth, though he did admit to making mistakes this year. He also said that we need new players in in the summer.

Hold the press!

Rafa bought £40m worth of players last summer. That's more than any of the clubs above us did.

How much did he make in transfer fees?

We outspent them in one transfer window so we should be 72 points clear.

Netcunt.
