Best female singer ever.

Scouse Tapas normally rules on music threads as he is of a generation that fully appreciates the art form.

His lamentable failings on this topic can be instantly remedied if he embeds a you tube link to Sandy Denney .

I’d do it myself if I knew how.

wrong on so many levels

Genuine question, why?

I remember reading an interview with Tom Jones and he said there was only one singer who appeared on his show in the 60s who scared the shit out of him and it was Aretha. I could listen to her all day, an absolutely astounding singer.

Listen to 'Master of Eyes'.

can't anwer that, just think it's wrong. I feel it's wrong but don't have the words to describe it. I love Franklin, but best ever? nah. Does not give me the shivers of pure melancholy, and it's the only factor I require from any music.

Fair enough.

It's so difficult to answer. What genre? Or style?

I'm not sure I saw anyone mention Eddie Reader. Not nearly as famous as some of those mentioned on here, and not nearly as powerful a voice as some of them either. But I think she has a very soulful voice (not the Fairground Attraction pop stuff, but some of the Celtic stuff she did later).

For example, Ae Fond Kiss. Beautiful.

she has got a wonderful voice.  She sung at the opening of the Scottish Parliament too, and was fantastic.  I love her a little bit.  Sassy Glaswegian.

Franklin can do melancholy as well as she can do joy.  But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
