I think we should all consider the possibility he's just an appalling player. Shearer was doing his nut watching the Carling Cup final, absolutely baffled as to why Carroll was nowhere near the action, nowhere near the ball coming in, wouldn't attack the ball. It made me laugh because Carroll is like that ALL the time. You can't blame Downing for not putting 100 balls on his head a match, nor can we blame the way the team plays. The two derbies this season sum up the mood towards Carroll, depending on your viewpoint.

 

At Goodison, it was a fairly broad view that he didn't play all that well, a point made by his critics. But he scored, a point made by his backers.

One of the most infuriating things is he still doesn't bust a gut to get into the box , i know hes not quick but thats no excuse , theres just no urgency about him at all.

The moment that did it for me was (I think) in the Carling cup final. Suarez pounced on an error and made his way, with the ball, towards goal and two defenders in pursuit. Instead of following him, Carroll just waited and watched from the edge of the area. Suarez's shot was blocked by the keeper and bounced tantalisingly out to the six yard box. If Carroll had run up in support of him, he would have scored a goal in a cup final. Any striker who either lacks the presence of mind or the desire to make a run into the box during a match of that significance shouldn't have any place in the world of professional football. He's frustrating in that way because he has the build and the basic ability to be near decent, he just looks like he doesn't give a fuck and doesn't want to be on the pitch most of the time.

Carroll has less impact on a football match than mad Erik Meijer. If he was 38 and had arrived on a free, I'd still be baffled as to why he was playing and what the point was of bringing him off the bench.

Interesting talk about the lack of a football brain - IMO that is what is lacking from far too many of our players. Adam is atrocious with his decision-making on the break - he literally dribbles and dribbles and dribbles until he either has the ball taken away from him by a defender so he can fall over and claim a foul, or he wellies it miles into the stand or straight into a defender and it rebounds back over halfway. Henderson ball watches and constantly seems to find himself in the least useful places on the pitch in an attacking sense. Carroll never knows when to make a run into the box, but just sort of hangs around waiting for the ball to get to him magically. Downing never really seems to know when to deliver the cross, and always seems in two minds about where to put it, and so he basically hits and hopes. At times, we look like a bunch of drunk toddlers.

There is a direct correlation between the purchase of big Andy and our chronic lack of goals. Kenny needs to get shut in the summer , get as much as we can for him, accept a monumental fuck-up was made and move on.
