It's not real IMAX though, is it? It's retrofitted shitty 3D IMAX. Fuck that. I'm going to watch it without the dimming goggles. I want to be able to actually see shit when it's dark onscreen.

Word. 3D films are like a Roy Orbison lookalike competition at a pedophile convention.

Ok, a new TV spot aired in America yesterday, they're starting to give a bit too much away now for my liking, including some pretty clear shots of the Engineer, there are some gifs doing the rounds so I'll spoiler them for those of you who want to stay 'fresh', the first one being the Engineer -

and the second being Rafe Spall's character in an 'interesting position' with the creature from the last full length trailer -

I want to get excited about this, but I'm finding it hard. The trailers look awesome, but the potential for it to be a crushing disappointment is just too great. Even 4 stars out of 5 will be a letdown.

One thing I'm really not keen on is the idea that the aliens were created or adapted by the space jockeys, either intentionally or by accident. Whether or not that's the case in Prometheus, the suggestion has been doing the rounds ever since the saga began, and I've always thought it would diminish the stature of the aliens. For me their power comes from the notion that they're a pure creation of nature, honed by evolution to become a perfect killing machine. The same aura attaches to the great white shark in real life - this was captured brilliantly in Jaws, both the book and the film.

Another reason I'm not going overboard is that I'm really disappointed that the Alien saga was never properly concluded. (I'm assuming it won't be now.) I wanted Ripley to be the one who discovered the aliens' origins, as her story was totally bound up with theirs and it would have been the perfect way to wrap it up. I loved the Dark Horse graphic novel trilogy that was published after Aliens, and I held out hope for years that the film series would evolve along those lines to become a big balls-out space opera, involving the aliens coming to Earth, and Ripley going to their homeworld to face them down. That would have been difficult to pull off as the budget required to do it justice would have been huge, and it would quite probably have involved too much gunplay for Sigourney Weaver to sign up. It would still have been nice to see Fox have the balls to give it a go though.

Anyway, I'm glad Scott is doing this as he's the only person who I think could pull it off. Fingers crossed.

Not familiar with Alien etc, whats a space jockey? some sort of creator?

It's a colloquial term for the creature from the first Alien film that was found dead at the controls of the derelict ship in which the alien eggs were discovered. It wasn't mentioned in the film series after that, but it looks as though it will feature centrally in Prometheus. One theory is that it (or they, if there was more than one of them) created or genetically engineered the aliens to use as a biological weapon.

Have you not seen Alien then? You need to pronto if not.

I honestly think this would have been an unmitigated disaster. Bringing the Ripley character back for "Resurrection" was a mistake. That film, generally, was a mistake. The "franchise" got steadily worse from the first film, in my opinion. That's not to say that "Aliens" isn't a good film, but i prefer the creeping claustrophobia of "Alien".

The reasons why i think this will be majestic are because it's Ridley Scott at the helm, and because he will almost certainly not make a "too much gunplay" style film. As Scott hismelf has said, the "Xenomorph" has been done to death now, if you're going to do it, go in at a tangent in the same Universe. This is exactly what appears to have been done here. Also, it doesn't bother me if the Aliens turn out to be "created" bio-weapons seeing as though most of the off-shoots have centred around people trying to use them as exactly that anyway. It would be quite ironic.

Just go with it, mate, enjoy the ride. You know you want to.

Resurrection wasn't a mistake. It was a poor film, but it wasn't a mistake. It was a brilliant premise and could have been a brilliant film with an English-speaking director and a more ambitious script.

Aliens is an awesome, awesome film. It's got claustrophobia just as effective as Alien, it's just the high-intensity panic kind rather than the creeping dread of the first film.

I still think it could be brilliant, and my thoughts that I've posted here don't change that. I've just had so many letdowns with films that I've been bouncing off the walls waiting for that I don't want to get my hopes up too much. The last film I got really excited about beforehand and came out of the cinema feeling it had fully lived up to my hopes was The Matrix.

I don't agree with Scott about the alien, I don't think the potential of it has been fully exploited at all.

On the bioweapons thing, there's a big difference for me between creating something for a purpose and trying to exploit something that already exists. If the aliens were engineered I feel like it puts another species above them in a pecking order.

I've got no problem with that. I'll wait and see Prometheus before deciding if it was correct or not though.

I was thinking that this whole trailer business is getting a bit out of hand isn't it? Trailers for trailers, pre-trailer trailers etc. Then the Daily Mash publish this today:

Skyfall released as preview to trailer

THE latest two-hour Bond feature Skyfall has been released as a teaser for the more exciting trailer.

Expectations for a white-knuckle Skyfall trailer are running high after the full, unwieldy 115 minute version uploaded by the studio to Youtube was revealed to have some brilliant explosions.

Film critic Emma Bradford said: “The feature-length Skyfall is inevitably padded out with product placement, bewildering plot points and Daniel Craig doing his ‘baboon shitting a peach stone’ face.

“But there’s at least two minutes’ worth of fireballs, one-liners and good old-fashioned breasts that leaves you gagging for the unbridled sensory overload of the trailer.”

She added: “Given the increasing fetishisation of film promos and the corresponding decrease in human attention span, it was inevitable that trailers and features would swap roles.

“Who needs story when you can have fast-moving shapes and colours punctuated by thrilling, doomy ‘bong’ sounds and tantalising glimpses of things that might be nipples?

“Not me.”

The Skyfall trailer will be released in cinemas worldwide next month, to be preceded at screenings by the 90 minute trailer-teaser feature length version of Anchorman 2.

Cinema manager Tom Logan said: “Although the main feature is obviously the Skyfall trailer, we hope that Anchorman 2 will whet audience appetites for the proper 2-minute cut that’s pure zinger with all the shit bits removed.

“Also by padding the evening out we will give audiences sufficient time to consume warm crisps covered in luminous cheese-esque substance and discuss the painful torments they’d like to inflict on the creators of those Orange adverts.”

Bond's going to be shite unless they change the format. I thought Casino Royale was ace but Quantum was same old, same old, he just runs around headbutting everyone until they're dead and is about as suave as Simon wearing a posing pouch.

With regards Prometheus. Was reading up a bit more about the original Alien life cycle before the Queen was introduced by Cameron.

The eggs were produced by caccooning humans, or whatever creature they captured. Note the Aliens don't seem to attack to feed, they attack and drag you the fuck away to web you up. Maybe the alien egges in the space jockeys ship were spawned from Stringer and co?

I'm going to be staying well away from any reviews. I don't want to have any taintage (is that a word?) before I go & see it on Friday. REALLY pissed off that I'm going to have to watch it in 3D but if it's good and I think the 3D has detracted I can always go & see it again. Friday night = curry then Prometheus and I cannot fucking wait.
