Surely the manager knows that his position would be untenable and the sack imminent if he parted with a player as popular as Pepe to raise funds.

I doubt it's true. But if Pepe was to leave for £23m, with that kind of cash I suspect we'd be in for better, more proven goalkeepers than Brad Jones and Adam Federici.
