If you ever needed convincing the FA don't have a fucking clue, surely appointing Ince as U21 manager would remove all doubt.

It's a "We aren't racist" statement.

To be (slightly) fair to Dean on the Barkley incident, I don't think he could have seen just how bad the challenge was from his position - the linesman should have done, though, and they all seem to be making far worse and far more (non-)decisions than a lot of the refs at the moment.

Mike Dean taken out of the spotlight and given Championship match after high-profile errors

The Premier League referee Mike Dean and the organisation responsible for referees have agreed between them that the official should be taken out of the spotlight, which led to Dean being assigned Championship match between Barnsley and Leeds United on Saturday.

There were discussions between Dean and Professional Game Match Officials Limited over the last week that he would benefit from a series of lower profile matches after errors in some big games broadcast live on television. On a run of high profile matches, the experienced referee had made mistakes, most notably in the West Ham home game against Manchester United on Jan 2.

It is unusual for a referee voluntarily to agree to moving down the hierarchy but Dean has acquiesced to the move. He is still regarded as one of the best referees among the select group of 17 and regarded as one of only a few who can be trusted with the biggest matches.

The select group referees take charge of 12 games in each round of fixtures which means that, as a matter of course, two will be in charge of games in any of the three Football League divisions. This is a usually regarded by players, managers and fans as a demotion but strictly speaking it falls within the remit of any select group referee.

Dean’s mistakes came when he was on a run of games over the Christmas period when scrutiny is always perceived as being higher. It was in the West Ham game that he sent off Sofiane Feghouli, a red card that was later rescinded by the Football Association. He and linesman Simon Long also failed to spot that Zlatan Ibrahimovic was offside for the second goal. In the Merseyside derby Ross Barkley should have been dismissed by Dean for a challenge on Jordan Henderson.

Since that game in east London, Dean has been moved to the lower profile FA Cup tie between Spurs and Aston Villa and then, last weekend, Sunderland’s home defeat by Stoke City. Both games were relatively incident free. Last season Dean refereed three Championship games and the League One fixture in February between Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield United. He was put in charge of the Birmingham City and Aston Villa derby in October.

Just got to wait for Oliver to be demoted now...

I've often wondered just how much of the poor officiating that gets laid at the door of referees is equally - if not perhaps more - attributable to weak linesmen. Dean's some way off, and I guess the linesman's no closer, but the linesman had a perfect side-on view of how high up Henderson's leg the impact is. Having said that, Dean gets the yellow out too quickly, and refs rarely bother going into consultation once they've got one colour card in their hand, so I've no sympathy.
