We still have our slack moments and Matip / Lovren don't fully convince as VvD's partner , but the difference it is making having a centre half who is physically dominant in the air is amazing.

I would guess that 40% or more of the goals we have conceded over the past 5 years are from dead balls or second balls from long punts to the edge of the box & not having your heart in your mouth every time the ball is lofted forward is a novelty. Hurts to think what position we would have been in now if we hadn't pissed around with VvD in summer.

That's as comfortable an afternoon as one could hope for.

Watford were never in the game, and bar a sticky 5-10 minute spell after Can got subbed where Milner was feeling his way into the game and Henderson's bright start faded, we were completely untroubled. We were hardly under the cosh in that spell either, and I can only remember a Richarlison header that was easy for Karius to deal with. In the second half, Matip blocked an Okaka effort after the only sharp bit of interplay from Watford all evening, and Pereyra curled a free kick from out wide just off the top of the bar. We were never threatened. Deeney for all his bluster and wannabe-hardman rhetoric was a complete non-factor. He's probably still in Matip's pocket.

Up the other end though, and what can be said about Salah? He was just lethal and ruthless, claiming his first hat-trick and adding another, together with an assist. The first goal was all about his quick feet and precision, and the second was a tap in from a fantastic cross by Robertson. The hat-trick goal was a smart piece of improvisation that the Egyptian has a knack for (I remember Suarez scoring a similar goal back in 2013/14), and his fourth was claimed when he snapped up a fumble from the goalkeeper. He was persistent and measured in setting up Firmino for a great little flick into the far corner. Watford simply couldn't live with him.

All our forward players had an excellent game. Mane probably edged Firmino because he was more involved in our build-up play in the last third and deserved a goal. He was one erratic touch away from getting it soon after we'd scored our fourth. He's playing well and is heavily involved in most things we do up top. It's just that the other African bloke is absolutely tearing it up in front of goal. Ings looked really good when he came on, and deserved a goal.

That last point is the one thing I want to see from our back-up forwards this season. Ings and Solanke haven't had enough minutes and haven't got any goals this season, but they need to show the sort of display Ings showed tonight. Do that, and they'll chip in with a few handy goals between now and the end of the season.

Henderson had a first half spell where he lost possession a few times and got beaten in a couple of 50/50s but otherwise, he looked bright and purposeful, and crucially he played at a higher tempo and looked to play on the front foot. Much much better than the tentative safety first stuff that allows opponents to settle and stifle us. Can looked confortable up until his injury, and Milner settled down after a ropey first 5 minutes. Wijnaldum did the donkey work in midfield but again looked bright and purposeful out there. That's what we need as a minimum from our midfield as it underpins Klopp's pressing game.

The defence? Untroubled and composed. Karius? The only danger to him was the onset of hypothermia from having to do fuck all while the snow and wind swirled around him all evening.

Just the right performance and result to wash away last weekend's meek surrender and lead into the international break.

"the big clubs will all be looking at him. In England and Europe". Shut up Shay Given you fucking divvy. Clubs in England can look at him all they like, but they aren't getting him.

As for Real and Barca, there's always a concern with them sniffing around but at the moment neither can afford him anyway so it's a moot point.

Given is a right blert. Considering he has played for such massive clubs as Newcastle and Sunderland he has clearly had his head filled with nonesense that Newcastle are as big as Liverpool as most geordies think.
