Henrikh Mkhitaryan was omitted from Manchester United's squad to face Stoke on Monday night because of doubts over his future.

 

The Armenia playmaker, 28, has been mentioned as being used as a possible makeweight in a deal to bring Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford this month.

 

Mkhitaryan was offered no assurances over his long-term future by United boss Jose Mourinho on Friday and, despite saying then he would be involved against the Potters, he was absent when the team was announced an hour before kick-off.

 

Mourinho explained that he withdrew Mkhitaryan from consideration while there is uncertainty regarding a potential move.

 

"I would lie if I said it was just a pure tactical decision," the Portuguese told Sky Sports.

 

"It was just a choice of the players that we know, that in this moment, they have 100 per cent their heads in Manchester United, and no doubts about the future.

 

"I don't think it's easy for a player to play when there are doubts about his future. It's an added pressure that a player doesn't need, so I think it's the best for him and for us, while the doubt is in the air, to protect him."
