I wouldn't be making Trent captain after some of his performances. The minimum requirement is maximum effort at all times and I don't think he does that at all. Too many individual moments over culpability in goals that have scuppered us,in particular the Real winner in Paris. I'm sure there are others too. If you want to play in midfield you also need to tackle and I don't think this is his strongest point and why Klopp has preferred him at RB most of the time. He has obvious talent but I believe we could live without him if he's decided he wants to move on.

I think Trent should be given the armband potentially as soon as this pre-season, give him the responsibility of a team built around him. Sink or swim time, see whether he can step up to prove he is world class.

 

Gerrard got the armband at 23, Trent is a bit older. Similar situation with a respected CB, although I reckon Virg would almost certainly hold a grudge which Sami never would have. Trent might need it though to take his game to the next level, and might be the deal-breaker to tie him into a new contract.

 

It's Liverpool 2.1 I guess, I think it might be time to build a team around him.

What sort of example do you think it sets to the rest of club never mind just the first team?  His attitude is absolutely horrific.  He’s the least suited personality to captaincy I’ve ever seen.

Based on his performance, mentality and attitude, he's not captain material. 

It's laughable that some here tend to compare him to Gerrard. The latter wouldn't fear to break a leg when the odds were against him.

I didn't realise that would be such a contentious viewpoint. It is a bit of a gamble but I think a risk worth taking. 

 

Might be a bit reactionary, and I might not feel the same later down the line, but right now after the past few weeks I don't want Virg to have the armband.

You don’t think that the test case of giving him the vice captaincy is an example of what would happen if you give him the actual captaincy?  I’ve been on to him from early on but there’s surely no argument that his attitude has gotten even worse this year.  Plenty of people who were convincing themselves he could actually defend and it was a big media over reaction are actually sick to death of him as well after this season.  In what world can you give someone who behaves like this the captaincy.  It’s not like he’s fucking zidane or something either.  He can hit a great long pass.  That’s basically it and we’ve still got people saying “build the side around him” which is absolutely insane.

He's got an attitude problem not an ability problem.  Fix the former and you have a world class player, if not you have a liability.
