I'm not really fussed about losing out on this player. We do genuinely 100 percent need to improve our first 11 and we need to work quicker to get deals done. Something just doesn't sit right with this guy I think its the fact he went to Russia in the first place.

Could well have been 3rd party ownership stuff taking the massive cash offer from Anzhi. I think he'd be good if we can get him. Will be well pissed off if he chooses Spurs, but it seems like Villas Boas has been tapping him up for years.

Yeah this is likely to sway it.

It's worrying that Spurs always seem to beat us to signing players though.

Hopefully we have somebody else lined up.

Di marzio on twitter saying we have offered 30million, plus 50 % profit if we sell him for over 30mill.

Tuesday....

That's a fucking fair offer. We've bid for Mkhitaryan - quality player, joined CL finalists; We've bid for Diego Costa, right player but used it as leverage for a new contract; Outrageous bid plus 50% sell on fee for Willian. Nobody can say we're not trying to get a top player in. They probably will say it, but it seems like we're giving it a good go.

If we can't get them, we can't get them. I'm disappointed that they're choosing other clubs, but - and I know this sounds like a defence of FSG, but it's not - we shouldn't just spend loads of money on players that aren't right. I'd sooner see us hang onto it. We should have done that with Carroll. It was right then and, if we can't get the right player, we should hang onto it now.

He shouldn't be the only target though.

If there really is 30 odd million there we're willing to spend and the fairly large wage we're probably willing to pay.

We should be working on other deals. People will say its hard to do XYZ in the market but other clubs have and still are this summer making good signings.

I just think it'll be a difficult excuse to pass off 2 summers in a row now.

Fuck that, 50 percent sell on fee. If they're so desperate for the player just match spurs fee and offer a higher wage.

Sell-on fees are, unless stipulated, for profit made above the original purchase price. If he's a failure and we sell him for £20m, we give them nothing. If we sell him for £32m, they get £1m. No big deal. I should have clarified that it's profit only, just incase.

Ok, that does make a bit more sense!

I don't agree with these deals in principle though, as it suggests that even before we sign the player we are already thinking about selling the player!

It's just an incentive for the selling club.

"We tried" won't work for me. They don't get paid to 'try'.

I hope we can pull this signing off but if we don't we should just move on and work harder on an alternative (not any alternative, but a good one).

There simply aren't any excuses. Thankfully, I think Brendan knows that.

We've got a good team. Time to really make a push for it now.

Fair comment, but what if we can't attract anybody of the quality we need?
