Drums, drumming and songs with drums

The drummer who played on Michael Jackson's music, never really thought about it. At 1:26 he does something with cymbals that I've never actually watched anyone do. The sound the cymbal makes as it stops is just so crisp and tight, I would imagine it's common in certain types of music but it doesn't seem to happen much in the mainstream...

They look like larger than normal splash cymbals he's using. More common in big band jazz.

I'm not convinced that was played on the actual recording of Beat It but could well be wrong.

I thought that being used in jazz more would be the case, I guess being produced by Quincey Jones meant there was a strong jazz influence anyway.

The likes of Buddy Rich would sometimes use a splash, you can see it here just below his chin...

I love the way in amongst it all he hits them and then gradually send his fingers down to stop the sound, making a sound in itself. Just incredible. I'll look into some of the jazz drummers and see/hear it.

He is definitely on that track - I think it was the first time he worked for Quincy. He plays on a few.

Ha, no pressure. Quincy: Michael, meet the drummer who will feature on the biggest selling album in history. What was your name again?

Yeah he’s just chocking the splash cymbals to shorten the sustain even more.

Doing it to two either side of you is showboating a little!

If you want rock/prog player examples Neil Peart did this a lot with cymbals.

I doubt Jeff Porcaro would be arsed, he was God for drummers around the LA session scene around then & Beat It was pretty bog standard stuff for a man of his talents.
