School reunions - are they a good idea ?

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I caught up with a few of the lads I went to uni with, for the first time in a very long time; so long, I was worried whether I'd even recognise them.  That worry wasn't eased by the fact that it was shortly before Christmas and the pub we'd arranged to meet in was rammed.

I just got through the door and spent a couple of minutes trying to scan the room for a familiar face when this enormous booming Welsh voice cut over the crowd

"YOU BASTARD!  YOU'VE STILL GOT HAIR!"

That was a decent night out.

There was one bloke I caught up with on Facebook a few years ago. We never met up, but we got into regularly sharing daft jokes; the cornier the better.  Then he died unexpectedly, which is the kind of thing that can happen when you get to our age.

Shit. That's horrible. I fear there are schoolmates I've lost touch with and liked as people, who've suffered a similar fate. Staying in Runcorn is like the Butterfly Effect of the frequent 100 year old plus lifespans of people in such places as the Japanese and Nepalese Mountain foothill villages.

I tried to woo a girl at school with a free parker pen on Valentines day.

When she rejected me I decided never to try anything that romantic ever again.

Maybe you should have presented the pen to her in the more traditional way!

I don't think we've had a school reunion for our year. Or if they did, I wasn't invited.

To the best of my knowledge, 2/30 of the lads that started in our class in 1989 are deceased. One of those was in second year.

Of the remaining 28:

- at least 2 of us post on here

- at least 1 has been to prison (my best friend when I was about 12)

- the lad who went out with the fittest girl in 6th form is apparently now gay

- 1 of them went viral after claiming that he was invited to play golf with Donald Trump

There's nothing more depressing than seeing the ageing, physical degradation of the school fitties. Was proper head over heels with some bird in college who looked like a young Beyonce, now she looks like Bungle. Crucified grace.
