A loss on the night but a win on aggregate. The Reds didn't play well but hit the woodwork three times and had numerous other close calls in a strange game against the Italian Champions.

 

Chris Smith is joined by John Gallagher and TLW Editor Dave Usher to discuss what went wrong and whether there is cause for concern moving forward. The lads discuss who they'd like to face in the last eight and also preview the weekend trip to Brighton.

I'm really looking forward to this one when I'm on my walk later. 

 

I've formed quite a strong opinion in my own head that we were actually extremely comfortable in this match and that Inter had to score an absolute worldly just to get on the score sheet. Our woodwork hits were not glances, but really unlucky ones that at least 2 of would normally go in. And then there's Virgs header where their defender was very lucky to get a block, and Diazs great chance.  We could have won this one very easily 99 times out of 100.  Last night was the 1 occasion where we lose.  And it's meaningless!  In fact, it's a good loss.  We get rid of the winning streak and get to start a new one on Saturday hopefully. The loss that means nothing as we should have won.  It's just plusses everywhere you look.

 

That's the opinion I have formed and I'll be on here moaning again if that's not confirmed by the podcasters.

I agree with that but also think that we were pretty shit too.

So do I. I just don't think we were under pressure at all and on any other day would have got at least a draw and probably a comfortable win.

No away goals makes the 2nd leg shite for us to be at home

Was saying to Dave, this was the strangest/hardest one of the season for me to host. A defeat is rare enough, but at least there's something to get your teeth into on those; some injustice, a poor performance to lament, etc. This was a defeat and a lacklustre performance, but all's well that ends well. It's challenging trying to ensure that doesn't carry over into a lacklustre episode.

With “I could’ve twatted the school bully all along” anecdotes of that quality, lacklustre was never a possibility

Oddly, I always thought you were better off away from home in the 2nd leg when away goals still existed. Get your home win in the first game and then kill the tie in the 2nd leg with an early away goal similar to what we did to Man City in 2018. It’s why I thought it was good to get rid of it.  Had Barca scored at some point in that famous 2nd leg the tie was dead. Not now. I also think with no away goals it’s now much better for our home game to be the 2nd leg. 
 

What Dave said about away goals is pretty much what I wrote last year in the thread here. I didn’t think we’d miss it once it was gone and it killed more games than it contributed to. Even just the idea a goal can be worth more than another goal seems absurd when you think about it. I’m glad it’s gone.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, but I was referring to Real vs PSG. Real probably would have crumbled after going 1-0 down at home last night under the away goals rules.

Ah. Yes, a good example of where the away goals rule would have more than likely robbed us of a really exciting finish to a game, and, of course, the chance to laugh at that cesspit of a club PSG.
