High praise for Flanagan

He had one absolute mare of a game against Blackburn 2 years back, which just erased him from the side. Fought his way back and deserves another start against Hull.

Johnson was total shite against the bitters. He deserves a place on the bench - it's about time Kelly got his chance, too.

He did really well against Everton, and hopefully he can reproduce that form until Enrique is fit, because Cissokho is dire in my opinion.

Is he a long term solution?  Who knows, but I don't think the thread should be about that.  It should be about giving credit where it's due and getting behind a young lad trying to make his way in the game.

We don't have a single fullback who can deliver a killer ball into the box. And haven't for years.

I was one who said he does not have what it takes to make it here. I may amend that to say he could be a very useful squad player who can come in and be solid at either fullback - that has great value to any side, especially ours over the next couple of seasons.

Prior to the games against Arsenal and Everton I have been disappointed to see Flanagan in the team and not Kelly (surely we need to give him a proper run out sometime) but he is doing alright for himself, easy to forget he is still only 20 given it was 2 and a half years ago he burst onto the scene in that game against City (and the rest of that season) not great going forward but perfect sort of player for derby games and agree with Stevie that he has some similar traits to Carra, get Kelly fit and involved then loan Flanno out in January to Palace or someone

If we get a top left back, that pushes him to third choice behind Enrique. As for being solid, I think that opinion on here will change after players skinning him for fun turns onto a goal.

He has been given a chance through injuries and a bit of luck to change what looks like the managers mind in selling him. The interview tells you there looking to sell him and with better options for left back and right back out on loan and Kelly looking the likely right back if he stays injury free, He appears to of been in the lucky postiton and a chance to maybe change the managers mind.

Liked him when he first broke on the scene but he seems to have had his career written off with a cherry on top by the 'all young players should be Ryan Giggs' brigade. Not the first or last to fall victim to that, which shows why it's crucial to protect and keep them out of the limelight as long as possible, this being a generation of internet fans that throw themselves off bridges when we lose a pre-season game.

Thought he played really, really well and he was our man of the match after Mingolet. No idea how he'll progress, but looks like he could develop into a strong dependable full-back and if we're serious about challenging for honours again, players like him will always come in handy.

He looked sound when he first came through, but was really pretty bad the next season.  Got completely and utterly roasted by Jonas Gutierrez against Newcastle so much that he had to get switched with Johnson and a mistake cost us a win against Sunderland.  I really didn't think he looked like he had the defensive of attacking capabilities to make it.  Still with young players you never can tell, hopefully he'll kick on from here.

I also always thought Robinson looked the better of the two, but he hasn't been pulling up any trees on either of his loan moves.

sure I read somewhere other day Robinson was doing really well for Blackpool?

We really need to get better at loaning our young players to Premier League clubs, there is no doubt that the Mancs,Arsenal etc would've been able to find Premier League clubs to take the likes of Wisdom, Flanagan and Robinson with the first team experience they've already got

I think the rules are that you can't recall a player from loan at a Premier League club, but you can from a Championship club.  Which is the main reason we sent Wisdom to Derby.  I think Fulham were also after him, plus one or two others.

He did look very good against Everton, I was particularly impressed with how he kept possession on certain circumstances. However it was only one good game and we have seen this from him before against arse and man city only for him to perform poorly against weaker opposition,If he can maintain the level he showed against Everton there should be a place in squad for him but he has to play like that consistently.
