We will go to the courts if they try that imo. There is no way FIFA can win that case. You cant force someone to play international football against their will. They will be opening a can of worms like the Bosman ruling if they try

It is in the FIFA rules mate, if they want to they can. They wouldn't be forcing them to go, just having them suspended from playing for the duration of the competition.

Fecafoot can ask Fifa to suspend the players at club level for the duration of the three-week tournament.

Cameroon coach Hugo Broos said: "These players have put personal interest above those of the national team and the federation reserves the right to take action against the players in accordance with Fifa regulations."

I'm not sure what a court could do about it apart from maybe have those rules altered after the event happened, which obviously wouldn't help us. I think the only hope is that the Cameroon players going kick up a fuss about it should it happen.

You are forcing the player to go or be suspended. It wouldn't hold up in court imo. If a player doesn't want to play they habe no right to suspend him for not playing. Its forced labour or be punished. While the case was going on we could have any ban withheld pending the appeal.

Its a massive can of worms FIFA won't want to open. They'd risk alienating most of the big UEFA countries if they'd tried forcing this through

Surely he is free to retire from international footy whenever he wants?

I think the problem is he hasn't officially retired from the national team. he has just said he doesn't want to go to this ANC due to his bad experiences under the previous coaching staff.

I personally think it is just the Cameroon coach trying to flex his muscles and the/he won't approach FIFA anyway.

We shall see.

I rather hope Cameroon insists on his suspension.

It would never hold up and if anything will kill any remote desire he ever had of playing for his country again, that would be it.  I think we could pretty much pencil him into our squad during any international break for the remainder of his career if that happened.

Never happen, though, just to be clear.  If he doesn't want to go there's approximately zero chance they'll force the issue.

The whole point is that Cameroon are not forcing him to go mate. They are looking into the FIFA regulation at suspending players who refuse to go for the duration of the tournament.

This is where we as a club just aren't very clever - someone should have just made sure he announced his retirement from international footy and then if he wants to play in future he comes out of retirement.

Bet the mancs et al would have had this boxed off, no messing.

Decent breakdown of Matip's situation here...

http://metro.co.uk/2016/12/21/cameroon-can-ask-fifa-to-impose-liverpool-playing-ban-for-joel-matip-beyond-afcon-duration-6337059/

Key part for me:

Matip missed last year’s tournament as he opted to stay with Schalke and the precedent that Cameroon have already set regarding the defender’s situation should play into Liverpool’s hands.

Let's not forget that Matip is a German citizen. There's no way the European Court of Justice will tolerate a Fifa rule that amounts to a restriction on his liberty to offer his services to employers. Cameroon will huff and puff then back down from a confrontation that they would almost certainly lose.

Why did Matip elect to play for Cameroon anyway? He was born in Germany and is a German citizen. Frankly he and the others who are refusing to play for Cameroon shouldn't be able to just pick and choose when they want to represent their country, although Matip is less culpable than the other 6 who are refusing a call-up since he's not a Cameroonian through and through. He should just retire from international football, be honest and say it's not for him and he'll be able to escape FIFA sanctions.

Why is this African Cup every two years anyway? And in the middle of the season? So stupid. Just make it every 4 years and hold it at the end of the European season since the majority of players are employed by European clubs.

It's something that Clubs should consider more when signing a player. You sign a player who is an African International, then you know there is a high chance of him being missing for several weeks every second year.

I kind of do, but it revolves around earning a wage and caring for a human being who relies upon me. Two things I'm confident Hades has little experience of.

Son of a pharmacist with a public sector job hates the public sector, the poor and disabled. Spoilt little brat.
