  1. 1. What to do?

    • Buy Dave House, Gerrard centre mid, go 442.
    • Buy Augero, Gerrard centre mid, stay 4231.
    • Gerrard in the hole, buy centre mid, stay 4231
    • Don’t care, kill Rafa, burn down RBS

With regards to replacements, bear in mind that Xabi wasn't a big name when we brought him in. My point being that if Rafa has done it before, he can do it again. Just cos his replacement isn't necessarily a huge name, doesn't alter his ability. Of course, this is all dependant on whether or not Xabi does actually go.

15m on a player wif 2 seasons max left at the top? Unlikely...

Shouldn't signings be made based on what we think they would help us achieve?

I don't think we should sign Senna but if his signing helped us win a league/champions league wouldn't the cost be justified.

You may be right. But if it won us the league it's a small price to pay. £7.5m a season isn't that much in the grand scheme of things.

We exist to win things afterall, not buy stock and sell it on for a profit.

edit: beaten to it by Cardie.

Always thought Senna was the perfect replacement for Mascherano if he went.

Exactly, Senna would be a potential replacement for Mascherano, if he left.

But I don't think so for Alonso, as I think Mascherano needs a ball player alongside him... that for me isn't Senna.

But shud he fail to help us achieve the league, we'll have wasted 15m on an over the hill midfielder. I know tht is something of a defeatist attitude, but i'm just tryin to think wat is likely, considering Rafa's policies (not bashing).

Well yer, that was then. They're all completely ridiculous now that have no basis in reality whatsoever.

Don't think they are any different now than they were then you have your completely unrealistic ones and your more normal clauses.

Around the same time that Figo had a 37-40 million pound buyout clause Seedorf had one that was over 100 million.

Senna kept Xabi out of the national team under Aragones, i am not sure whether the new man wants to start Xabi or Senna but he would be fine and i cant see him being more than 7 or 8 mil. Who cares about sell on value, we want trophies.

I am sure Rafa could develop Martinez into a real player.

If our top two are fit i am not sure who partners Masch is the be all and end all, i think Xabi is replaceable whereas Reina, Carra, Masch, Gerrard and Torres are not

Okay, whatever, shut up. ;)

Think what i was saying was, Arsenal not signing Senna had nothing to do with a ridiculous buy-out clause.

More to do with being as old as some of the first-teamers' dads perhaps.

Sell on value is very important now considering that Rafa will probably have net transfer budgets of 0 for a few years, or at least quite low due to the debts and repayments beind mandated.

Anyone we buy will have to fit a certain profile i'm sure

I'd say he's fairly unique, as there are not many players who can offer what he does.

Creative central players (as Real have said) are rare to find now. The best are Fabregas, Iniesta, Xavi... and a few more. These would all cost 30+ million and that's why Alonso is also in this bracket.

Isn't that an oxymoron? I mean, he's either unique or he isn't. I'd say Pirlo and Michael Carrick are similar players in terms of long/short passing range and awareness, but not quite at Xabi's level. Fabregas, Xavi and so on I associate more with a short passing game and clever movement, and in Cesc's case also the ability to time forward runs (although Xabi's probably playing to instructions in most games). Of course Xabi's short passing is also of a very high standard but I think he has a better range than the Barca players.
