I think Xabi is more mobile defensively and People expect Barry to be more mobile attacking-wise which Xabi generally isn't. (Although you could say thats down to Rafa's instructions)

I know a little off topic, but does anyone have any idea how much Daniele De Rossi would cost. Ive watched him for a few years as Im a big fan of Italian football and hes one of the best up and coming european central midfielders.

Im a fan of Barry but for the fee of around £15m, there are surely better options around for a similar fee. I think rafa will start to look elsewhere if this final bid isnt accepted.

Superb footballer but a bit too much like Mascherano in the position he plays I think. We need someone a little more cultured in the centre of the park, someone like Xabi Alonso.

Going to sound patronising and obvious this rash but is looks like Xabis off unfortunately. Maybe Toulalan from Lyon?

Im just thinking of other possible replacements for Xabi if we are priced out of a move for Gaz Baz.

I've only seen De Rossi play about five or six times but he's impressed me greatly. Looks like a cracking player.

Who does he play for, and how much would he cost?

I also like Zapater of Zaragoza, although i've only seen him play at right back. No idea what he's like in the centre but he looks like an excellent footballer.

Anyway, we already have what we need in Alonso.

I like Toulalan, is here a harder worker than that lad? Not a big name but a great little player. I doubt he would cost more than £10m.

There is no way Gareth Barry is worth anywhere over £14m.

De Rossi is at Roma and I doubt he would leave there in all honesty. I'd play Gerrard back there and buy a link man.

Playing Gerrard in one of the two central positions is a nonsense. It is as good as neutering him. If you then say you'll let him roam it fucks the idea of the system up.

If we bought Villa in, then i'd consider it. Obviously you'd lose Gerrard's dynamism in the final third but if Villa was succesful, then he would replace that and provide goals and assists.

You could then have Gerrard in midfield pulling the strings.

I think it would be madness. Mascherano/Lucas/Barry can nudge the ball around in deeper positions, you want Gerrard where he can hurt teams. It's like having a nuke and using it to block a road; why waste it when it's so powerful a weapon?

I really, really don't see the point in moving him again when we have found a position he is happy with and performing well in.

He'd probably be happier playing in centre midfield if you asked him. Not that it matters because at the end of the day he should play where he's told to, but the point i'm making is that i'd much rather have Gerrard in centre midfield with Villa just behind Torres, as opposed to Barry in centre midfield, Gerrard behind Torres and Downing/Milner out wide.

Because it could work out better for the team? I'm not saying we should definitely do it, but if we signed Villa then I wouldn't have a problem with it.

As I say, having Villa in behind Torres with Gerrard in midfield would be preferable to having Barry in there with Milner/Downing out wide.

Obviously if we signed Barry and a top class wide player then that would be great.

If we're playing 442 i want Gerrard on the right with the freedom to roam.

But we'd need a natural left winger. Like Downing.

Let's put our best player on the right and put a yard dog like Downing in our midfield too... sure do aim high don't ya mate?

If Steven Gerrrard was bought by Man United, Arsenal, Barcelona, AC Milan, Real Madrid etc where do you think they would play him?
