Mainz president - Liverpool was 'Klopp's best decision ever'

The president of Jurgen Klopp's first club Mainz has declared his move to Liverpool “the best decision he ever made.”

Klopp was the coach that made Mainz 05 as a football force and today the Reds boss takes his Liverpool side back to the club where he spent 18 years as a player and later a manager.

Nicknamed 'Karnevalsverein' (The Carnival Club) because they're based in one of Germany's foremost carnival cities, Mainz 05 partied under Klopp as he steered them into the Bundesliga for the first time and the festivities will resume this weekend when he returns with his Anfield stars.

Club president Harald Strutz whose tenure extends back to 1988, two years before Klopp first arrived as a player, told the ECHO: “We'll have a big festival in Mainz. Jurgen Klopp is like a symbol for the success of our club.

“In 2001 we decided to make him manager of our team and we've always been in contact.

“For me it was beautiful that he decided to go to Liverpool. I'm of the opinion that it's the best club for him, for his mentality, for the kind of human being that he is and the way he likes to play football.

“He will be supported by all the people of Liverpool and I saw a lot of good impressions from their time in the Europa League last season.

“It's the best decision he ever made. I'm very happy that we have the opportunity to meet him again in Mainz against his Liverpool team. The Mainz people will be really delighted to see him.”

Those days with Jurgen Klopp will always be remembered

Given that the Reds faced Barcelona in a lucrative friendly at Wembley just 24 hours before their trip to Mainz, it would have been convenient for Klopp to put any homecoming on the back-burner in what has been a hectic pre-season schedule.

However, it's testament to the respect and affection he has for the people of Mainz that he's taking a Liverpool team back there at the earliest possible opportunity.

Mr Strutz said: “Jurgen had 11 years as a player at Mainz and another seven years as coach with us so that is a good friendship.

“Not just myself but all the people and the staff plus the supporters.

“He started his career at our club and everybody knows it was a very emotional time for us.

“Two times we missed out on going up to the First Division and it was a very sad experience (losing out by one point, and then one goal).

“But in the third year he succeeded in taking us up to the Bundesliga for the first time and it was so emotional for the whole town and the whole region. Those days with Jurgen Klopp will always be remembered.”

Mainz are now established as a Bundesliga club having spent seven consecutive seasons in the German top flight and they finished in sixth position last season.

In a similar way that Bill Shankly instilled a certain way of working at Liverpool with the Boot Room mentality, so Klopp's legacy has left its mark in the Rhineland.

He looks for the type of players who make a team

Mr Strutz said: “Jurgen is interested in our club and now all our people are interested in Liverpool because he was the man who put success in our club.

“His name will always go together with Mainz but now we have the same type of coaches. After Klopp we had Thomas Tuchel, who also went to Dortmund, and now Martin Schmidt.

“There is now a special philosophy at our club and that comes from Klopp.

“From the start he was full of portraying a positive image and embodying a spirit of how to bring more success. He looks for the type of players who make a team.”

He added: “Jurgen is the kind of man who is not too proud to talk to people on the street or let the success go to his head – he is Klopp.

“God gave him him the character to say 'okay, this is my life, I know I am an important man but on the other hand I know that I am only a human being.'

“He gives that kind of attitude to the players too. It's about more than the money. You have to have an identification for the club and the supporters. That will always be the secret to his success.”

Having known Klopp the player for over a decade before Klopp the coach, Mr Strutz wasn't surprised by the type of personality he became.

He said: “Jurgen has always been the same. He'd always have time for people. He'd be open and straight up but always with respect which is very important.

“He'd never be a man who would say 'what are you asking me?' with his nose up in the air.'

“He was always the one who would speak for the team. He wouldn't just concentrate on the moment but would look for the development of the club.

“Jurgen and Zeljko Buvac are a combination. He's not only a friend but they're always working together.

“They have developed a kind of imagination and spirit for the team and the club and now they have decided to go to Liverpool.”

Hart, Maguire & Kelleher. Never heard of the cunts.

Is Gomes supposed to be Gomez?

Hart is a LB, Maguire played in defence in the cup off the bench for us last year, Kelleher is a 17-year-old Irish goalie, Gomes is not Gomez, and is a forward.

Sam Hart - Left back

Joe Maguire - Left back/centre half

Caoimhin Kelleher - Goalkeeper

Toni Gomes - Striker

Nice one stato's.

I've seen Maguire play a few times, he looked solid enough. Do you think either Hart or Maguire could step up and help solve our fullback woes ?

Maguire is steady and more defensive of the two. Has decent delivery from wide areas. Been playing more often as a centre half for the ressies.

Sam Hart is a more attacking left back. Decent pace and a good engine.

Both could do a job if called upon, but are probably not viable for more than just the odd game. At the moment anyway. Long term, I don't think either make the step up with us.
