Picked this up from TIA, not sure of its authenticity but if true could be the start of the NESV appointment structure and maybe the start of the end for Hodgson.

"The good start of AS Saint-Etienne does not stir internally. According to RMC, the club's sporting director Forez, Damien Comolli, resigned today. The current is passed over for several months now between Comolli and Bernard Caiazzo.

He confirmed on radio that he felt "more in harmony with the club management." The athletic director has chosen to take the lead, but it is rumored that a position is waiting for him at Liverpool." Two years after his arrival in Saint-Etienne, the athletic director could fly to England. Having been a scout for Arsenal and then general manager of Tottenham, he could land in Liverpool ."

What does 'General Manger' mean ? Wasn't he a pretty shite director of football at Spurs ? If he came here to work under Deschamps I'd be on board, but on his own ? What role would he play at the club ?

Probably nothing but shenanigans.

He was shit at Spurs wasn't he?

He did get the most out of the Keane and Berbatov deals though so he's no mug when it comes to money.

I think so, well I seem to remember him being one of the scapegoats when it all went wrong under Ramos. Think Comolli signed Bent for £16m, well he's done well since but was awful at Spurs.

More hit than miss in my opinion.

Tom Huddlestone

Aaron Lennon

Jermaine Jenas

Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Dimitar Berbatov

Didier Zakora

Gareth Bale

Jonathan Woodgate

Luka Modric

Heurelho Gomes

Grzegorz Rasiak

Mido

Ricardo Rocha

Darren Bent

Giovani dos Santos

Roman Pavlyuchenko

Vedran Corluka

Bolded ones played tonight, players still in the squad in italics. Berbatov and Bent sold for big money, Zakora done a decent job in the team. Failures in my eyes are Rasiak, Mido and Rocha.

That's not bad at all.

I've just posted this on another thread - but I don't want a DoF (or whatever equivalent title is given) - I want a good manager who can be trusted with both transfer dealings and preparing the team. It's no coincidence IMO that Spurs picked up after they ditched this setup, it wasn't a simple case of 'Arry being better than Ramos.

Hit and miss if you ask me.

I'd count 3 bad signings, possibly 5 depending on your view of Gomes & Woodgate. Bent was sold on for decent money, as was Berbatov.

Comolli's transfer track record

Hits

Dimitar Berbatov

Signed for £10.9 million in May 2006, scoring 46 goals in 102 appearances before being sold to Manchester United for £30.75 million.

Jonathan Woodgate

The England centre-back arrived in January 2008 for £7 million and scored the winning goal in the Carling Cup final against Chelsea a month later.

Darren Bent

Stuck behind Berbatov, Keane and Defoe last season, the £16.5 million signing from Charlton struggled but has shown his value since becoming first choice this season, with 12 goals and an England recall.

Misses

Kevin-Prince Boateng

The supposed future star of German football has made just 14 appearances for the club since signing for £5.4 million from Hertha Berlin.

Gilberto

A Brazil international left-back but hardly Roberto Carlos. Was substituted at half-time on his debut and has never got properly fit.

Heurelho Gomes

The Brazilian goalkeeper arrived for about £8 million in the summer with an impressive pedigree but a series of embarrassing errors have shattered his confidence. Occasional flashes of his shot-stopping cannot disguise his terror on crosses.

I don't think a DoF would just turn up with 5 players and say to the manager.. "Here you go.. All the best... " and head off back to his office waiting for the next window to open...

I would hope that any DoF at LFC would work WITH the manager identifying targets together and then the DoF does his best to get those targets on board....

You could argue that Gomes and Boateng have subsequently gone onto become sucesses now. Anyone who work with/was involved with a Wenger scouting programme must be decent

Reasonable track record

It is less about not trusting the manager but more about providing him with a specialist in that domain. I would have an issue with an appointment who didn't have a track record of success and handling such transfers. An example of how not to do things would be the Mike Ashley situation.

On the face of it Comolli would seem like a good fit. I would also question how much control Rednapp has on transfers, Levy is no mug. By this I mean Rednapp can suggest a player but if the player does not fit the criterion that the club have in place he can just suck eggs.

Commoli was one of the earliest advocates of the statistical "moneyball" approach to transfers. Under him, Spurs had a policy of buying promising young English players from lower league clubs and most of them have been successful.

I saw an article about him recently about being influenced by the baseball stat people, will try to post it up.

Commoli was made a scapegoat when Ramos bombed, but with a good manager in Redknapp, his signings have been shown to be good.

My normal source speculates in him signing for us as sports director.

I would be thrilled with us having someone in that role.

And Comolli would make sense regarding NESV's noises about a strategy of finding value in the market.

He's done alright in that department.

I'm not convinced. There are some good players on that list, but how much money have Spurs spent since 2005? I might be wrong but I have it in my head that season on season they've had a pretty big net spend, around the 20 million mark? I can't help but think that with that sort of spending, they've substantially underachieved since then.

How reliable is your source as in A he knows for a fact or B he writes for the Times?

This kind of business isn't a fact until the papers are signed and .tv reveals the news.

He's a man who wourks in football in the same "parts" that comolli do (spotting players).

Wouldn't be surprised if he knew him, but that last thing is purely speculation from me.
