So he glossed over the ineptitude of tonights performance. Big deal. As long as they're working on improving things, I don't have an issue with it. Benitez used to say things like 'we controlled the game' all the time, when we offered as much threat as a declawed kitten.

We won, yes it was a poor performance by and large, but we're through to the group stage, so job done. Give the man a break.

To sum up:

Good:

Passing allowed us to control the game

Chance creation second half

Mental toughness of players to WIN in that atmosphere

Lucas was good, Poulsen and Kuyt improved massively as the game went on

Squad depth highlighted- many top players missing

Bad:

We didn't play free-flowing, expansive football and win at a canter.

Get real! This is an away game with half a team, in Turkey, on the back of a disappointing result, in the torrential rain, with 90 fans rendered totally non-existent by the feverish Turkish support. Great job last night and a great result for me.

Shit pitch, pissing down rain, three days after we have just played at City, most of our star players missing, one goal down in front of a crowd and team who wanted it more than we did.

I think it was a good performance on the whole! Not great, but quietly effective, Paulsen looked composed and can pass a little, Aurelio looked a bit off, N'Gog is not good enough, Cole is still adapting, I was quiet pleased.

But, Roy, sort the fucking subs out (Our other manager named Roy was a twat for not making subs).

The first half was completely woeful.

Second half was better, although not that great, but we got the job done.

We got through, which is really all that matters. Hopefully our best players don't play any games in this tournament and Pacheco and Kelly play every game.

Really go at West Brom on Sunday, get a good win and build confidence.
