Thursday.

*sighs*

The disappointment is only hitting home now. It's strange seeing the Sky ads for Mancs v Milan etc and not seeing us come up.

He has, would have had more too if he'd not chosen to play for Spain u19s

Yeah. Was`nt he suppose to play against both Leeds and Arsenal, but lost out due to internationals??

I find it strange that young players dont pull out of youth internationals ( unless its a world/european championship), when they lose 1st team experience because of it. Playing first team football is far more important for their education.

Did`nt Martin Kelly pull out of one England squad, because he was involved with the first team squad?

Indeed. If fit I'd be tempted to go with Aquilani, Pacheco and Spearing as the midfield 3. Give the 3 that played against the bitters and Arsenal the break before City.

Fuck no. I want to see a strong side, with only Pacheco and Kelly starting and the rest made up of regular starters for us. It's the only way we'll learn anything about them.

And Amoo on the bench too please hopefully getting some minutes.

chance of him getting regular games is zilch!

gerrards first choice second striker, aquaman will be second choice and patches will be third.i can see he him leaving within 12 months

Its okay to have quality back up you know. And if their good enough, they'll force their way in. We don't have to sell them just because their not starting every game.

As a quick example, chelsea have j. cole, zhirkov and malouda (and that young frenchmen) for their left midfield slot. Their not gonna sell them just cause their not starting every game.

Having competition for places is what its all about.

Seriously, you couldn't have put this in either the Dani Pacheco thread, or the Unirea match thread, both of which were high up on the first page of the FF?

It's a yes from me, by the way.

Where would he play? I like him in a 'Beardo' sort of role, but i doubt he'd start there. I don't want the lad starting out of position. I agree though he deserves a chance - he's really, genuinely, champing at the bit.

I always thought he could play behind the strikers but in front of the midfield, in hole as it were.

I've voted 'yes' because we need a new hero, I’m holding out for a hero ‘til the end of the night, he’s gotta be strong, and he’s gotta be fast and he’s gotta be fresh from the fight.

Yes, he'd be ideal there, but I fear the Lucas-Mascher axis makes that unlikely. Once again, if Lucas is rested and gerrard comes back into midfield then that could work. Pacheco thrives around the edge of the area, so I'd hate to see him stranded on the left or right 'doing a job'.

I'd have him playing behind N'Gog, with Gerrard and Riera either side.

EDIT: Or playing Gerrard alongside Lucas would indeed make sense.

    • That run he went on in the 1990 World Cup against Brazil to set up Cannigia was great. They were proper snide in that tournament though.
    • Well I dont like to run any player into the ground, especially a young un like Neco. I just wonder what the coaching staff expect of him. He's a winger converted to a fullback. But, are the staff telling him to get forward every opportunity to kind of be like Trent or what?   Seemed to me Neco was frequently caught upfield and out of possession. He wasnt the only one to lose out possession last night and one or two more experienced players suffered the same.   But we are where we are. Despite thoughts to the contrary, we cant go out and just buy, buy, buy like city or chelsea.   I just want to see players like Neco find their feet and if that means he doesnt cross the half way line, fine, we take that hit until Trent is back and he concentrates on defending rather than try and be Trent 2.
    • *Meant to put this here instead of the match thread*   Of course, Neco is still young and Trent has set such a high standard, it'll be unfair to expect similar quality from him. He still has time to improve and hopefully does so.   The problem at the moment is Neco hasn't showed signs of progress since he got into the team. I reckon a large proportion of the 27 times he lost possession was caused by taking too many touches on the ball in his own half, trying to beat a man. Atlanta definitely did their homework on him based on that.   It has been a very noticeable thing. Rather than his teammates being blamed for passing him the ball, the focus should be on the young lad learning to keep it simple at the back. Rhys Williams is an example of a young lad keeping it simple with his passing at the back. 1 or 2 touch maximum, straight to a teammate.

    • I've never seen a ref be that lenient in a European game before. The likes of Atkinson and Riley are consistent at Premier League level with allowing a bit of a harder game, but usually at European level the refs err on the side of protecting the players.   Origi was shit last night but the couple of times he looked to run onto a pass he got scythed down with challenges that were absolutely nowhere near the ball. Tackles from behind were banned from top level footy in the mid 90s but were permitted to make a resurgence last night.   Wasn't just in Atalanta's favour either - Tsimikas got away with a few before he went in the book, and there were a few times one of our lads caught an opponent, held their hands up to say it was accidental, only to see the ref waving play on.   If anything we weren't going in hard enough. Maybe with a few of our more experienced lads on the pitch we could have adapted a bit, taken advantage of it. Ilicic and Gomez were excellent for them but might not have been so good after a reducer or two.
