Perhaps to see if tactical changes/adjustments made at half time make a difference? Or if a player carrying a slight knock is able to run it off? Or...

Still fucking annoying though. When things aren't going to plan in the first half changes should be made at half time so the players can come out for a fresh start.

I think that in this case, Rafa was giving Gonzo 5 minutes to see if he could run off that knock he got toward the end of the first half.
