Transfers summer 2016

Reports in Holland say #LFC have made an £11 mill offer for PSV left back Jetro Willems..

135 first team games for a 22 year old? 20 Dutch Senior NT matches?

I know nothing about him besides that he's a short arse and quite experienced for his age. Shame about the height, but sign him up.

“When you remember last season, there were a lot of games when we were really dominant,”

“When we were good with the ball, passing and moving, overlapping, things like this, but in the end we didn’t finish it off enough.”

“You need players for whom it’s natural that they go there (into the penalty area),” says Klopp. “We have these players (now).

“In this moment we have four or five strikers. Five, including Roberto (Firmino), for the roles behind. You need the numbers to push everyone.”

“We had too many games last year, we couldn’t change,”

“We could push them through and say: ‘this is our level, go, go, go.’

“You need to be able to give someone a rest and not lose quality,”

“You need to have something like an uncomfortable situation for the players,” says the German. “I like these guys. I have no doubt about their attitudes.”

We have a strategy???

At least we can guarantee that Man U will not win the CL this year even if they do spend £120m + £20m salary per year on Pogba, someone they let go for free a couple of years ago. Next year?  Who knows?

Personally I think it's too much but the supporters won't be thinking about the cost if they are holding the Premiership trophy up come next May.

ARdja you suggest we could pay the money for one player rather than two. I get the point but it's not that simple really. Let's say you want to convince Marco Reus for example.

1 he'd be a player on vastly higher wages than the rest and others would want parity, when their deals come up for renewal.

2 he'd want assurances the club was going places and expect similar signings hence more on fees and wages.

3 you'd have to over pay to beat the other clubs further inflating fee and wages for all players

4 they'd have to be willing to overcome lack of CL (money and recent history will improve this)

What this shows, is that we'd be extending ourselves way beyond our means. So yes we could offer more but not without spending vast amounts more than we have and we can't afford to do that. United can so they are. They have won stuff in recent years. We are a mid table side with a league cup and woeful European performances and league finishes in recent years. We haven't even won the league in most players lives these days. We're just a club with a great history and we need to prove we consistently challenge. we would have to spend enormous amounts to catch up and we do not have the financial backing from either owners or commercial income. One season of failure and we'd be bust.

It's better to build slowly in my opinion and get a semblance of having our shit together to attract players. We have the manager, we've got to finals a better showing in the league and we can then move again.

To attract top players you need three things, imo:

-A shitload of money

-An attractive "project" (this includes a great manager, a good probability of winning trophies in the future, the clubs performance in the last few seasons and the size of the club)

-European football

We have none of these things except a decent (but not great) amount of money and a good manager. There are about 10 other clubs who can offer top players a more attractive overall package than we can and this is reflected in the fact that we can't even sign a terribly out of form Mario Gotze despite offering him wages that would make him the highest paid player at the club and the chance to re-unite with the manager who got the best out of him.

United on the other hand, can pay the highest wages in the world, are one of, if not the biggest club in the world, have Jose Mourinho as manager and are only a few years removed from winning a major title. This puts them in the mix for any player. The reality is that we can't even shop in the same market as they do.

It's not about having "ambition". West Ham have shown great ambition this summer in bidding for Lacazette, Batshuayi and Umtiti and they've ended up with none of them because those players just wouldn't consider West Ham and it's the same thing with Liverpool. Top players just don't consider us as a viable option.

If Klopp honestly thinks those were our problems, last year, then that is preposterous.

I think having a star quality player helps attract other quality players. We want to be able to eventually have quality players all over the pitch. Why not start now? We know we have the money. We spent close to £60m on two attacking midfielders. We're gonna get even more money from the sale of Benteke and Markovic. What's the point of having both Mane and Wijnaldum? We are already well stocked in that area. Because whilst we're 'slowly' building, other clubs like Southampton and West Ham are leap frogging us.

Milner plays wide right, or he doesn't play at all IMHO.

He can play wide right or wide left.

So for the three positions behind the striker, we currently have Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, Mane, Wijnaldum, and Milner. That's 3 players to sit on the bench or play in an unfamiliar role if everyone's fit. I haven't even included Markovic and Ojo.

In your opinion, why would you say the likes of Mkhitaryan, Diego Costa, Alexis and Gotze all rejected to sign for us?

Alexis signed for Arsenal when we finished second, and they were what... fourth? So league position had little to do with that.

If you're not in the CL then you would probably have to offer more money than other CL clubs. Our owners aren't prepared to do that, so that's probably the reason for the rest?

I recall City signing plenty of quality players at the start of their project. Chelsea will have no problems signing quality players this window either.

After being bought by the Sheikh, City signed Jo, Robinho, Wayne Bridge, Bellamy and Nigel De jong as their most expensive signings. Not exactly top class so you're wrong there. The reason for that being that they were a nothing club with zero pedigree at the time, meaning top players weren't going to join until they proved they could compete at the top.

This is the reason Chelsea will sign top players this window. Despite finishing 10th, players know they are a top club who will win things in the future. Liverpool does not have this reputation (nor the ability to pay insane wages) which is why the best players won't even consider us, and Klopp knows this, by the way.

Robinho was a big signing, despite the eventual outcome. Please also check as to when they signed David Silva and Yaya Toure too, they weren't in the CL then either. We could afford to pay close to £60m fee and £200k salary on two AMs. You offer that to a top player, they will come.
