I find that speed is definitely what we are lacking in this game, gerrard and Lucas are getting fucked because they have to consider which midfielder they are able to take on, rather than just go for whoever that has the ball.

It's never been a good idea having Gerrard closer to the centre backs than the forward/s.  Rafa knew.  It's not  he can't play there, it's more having one of most creative and best finishers so far from goal is just stupidity.
