Kewell's agent slams Liverpool, UK doctors

SEBASTIAN HASSETT

February 2, 2010.

HARRY KEWELL'S agent believes the football world was never able to see the best of the striker at Liverpool because of the ineptitude of the British medical system, which repeatedly failed to correctly diagnose and treat Kewell's injuries.

Bernie Mandic, who has enjoyed a career-long association with Kewell, revealed that his star client was repeatedly denied access to the world's leading medical authorities, which he believes are found in Australia, where Kewell now receives treatment.

The Galatasaray star is in Sydney to have his injured groin assessed, with the good news arriving yesterday that the injury - which some had speculated could keep him sidelined for months - would keep him from training for just two weeks, with a full comeback thought to be about a month away.

While Kewell, 31, has largely managed to resurrect his career in Turkey, Mandic and his marquee client have been left to ponder what might have been had Liverpool's medical staff allowed Kewell to be assessed elsewhere during what should have been the peak years of his career.

''The reason he gets treated out here now is because we have the best medical staff in the world,'' Mandic told the Herald yesterday. ''He lost 3½ years of his career at Liverpool because the guys over there in England had, quite literally, no idea what they were talking about.

''You have to wonder what they're doing over there. Perhaps they're trying to protect their reputations, but they're certainly not trying to protect their players. I think it's a disgrace, as I think it was a disgrace the way Harry was treated. What goes around comes around, and people are now wondering, 'How has he recovered like that?' when everyone in England thought he was a broken toy …

''It's a damn shame we didn't … come here earlier. If nothing else, the last World Cup would have seen a far better Harry and maybe they could have avoided the [foot] injury he suffered in the end. But that's life, you learn from it, move on, and that's exactly what Harry's done. Now he doesn't take any chances. He likes to get second opinions, and the bottom line is that Australian doctors have never let him down.''

Ironically, Liverpool - who are believed to have thought Kewell would never make a full recovery - are now trying to track down the Australian specialists who brought him back to full health.

''We had Rafa Benitez call him the other night inquiring who these guys were because Fernando Torres has got such major problems now,'' Mandic said. ''Then we've had Jonathan Woodgate's physio, Dave Hancock, who used to work at Chelsea and before that worked with Harry and Jonathan at Leeds, inquiring about Jonathan, who is apparently almost unfixable.

''Look at Liverpool - why is it that over so many recent years, usually around November, lots of their key players are injured? … It's always soft-tissue injuries. How come other clubs, like Arsenal, don't have that sort of a dilemma? And why do their players recover quicker? There's logical reasons for all of this.''

While he may have a point, he really didn't need to have a dig. He also slagged off Leeds quite badly when Kewell was transferred, and pocketed about £2m of the total £5m transfer fee. If the UK is so shite, why did he not advise Kewell to move abroad sooner?

Whether its a dig or not, I have wondered for a while why we get so many injuries and why most players (most notably Stevie, Torres and Agger) keep getting injured again.

In Agger's case there was an in depth article in the danish press a while back that went into some detail about his problem. The jist of it was that it would take 18 months of rehabilitation on strengthening particular muscle groups to solve the problem and that in the mean time he would be susceptible to strains in other muscles as they sought to re-balance.

Kind of differs from what Gala's web site had to say about him, albeit a year or so ago:

Kewell’s general physical condition hasn’t changed a great deal since 2003. That’s why our club had detailed information about his former operations and injuries during the check ups made before the transfer. That he is in a good condition and none of the operations and injuries had left any scars or remnants is determined.

Those news made in our media concerning his seldom absenteeisms and injuries are usual muscle and skeleton system problems that can be witnessed in all the players.

Kewell had two injuries during the positions he enterred in routine trainings and matches of Galatasaray Professional Football Team. None of these injuries had any link to his previous injuries. He had recovered in the normal, estimated duration and returned to the fields. There has never been any occasion when he was excluded from the 18 player match squad because of his physical incapabilities.

Recent speculations about Harry Kewell’s health stems largely from exaggerated and distorted news. His so called otoimmun hepatit disease and related assumptions should be considerred unethical since they pass beyond doctor-patient relationship. While this situation was known for 5 years and has never been the subject of any news in the UK, the approach in our country should be considerred as the idiosyncrasy of our media!

What matters for Galatasaray Sports Club is whether the player can play football in the desired speed and level during the latest check-ups. That is why Harry Kewell has passed from a detailed check-up session before the season started. The specialists of the area have been consulted about any possible negative situations he might live and it was determined that no negativities for a professional football player of his range is evident.

Since he had missed several matches last season, his physical fitness is being increased with personal trainings in our club right now. For this purpose, apart from the usual practices, he practices for extra hours with his own physiotherapist who is present with him at all times. In other words, contrary to decreasing the volume of his trainings, he has been increasing them to prevent any deficiencies both in terms of fitness and number of matches played. Other than this, he has no obstacles to play two matches a week. He should never be treated differently than nay other player. There has never been any problems stemming from his health.

With regards to our public,

Galatasaray Sports Club

I've been trying to find a quote on Galatasaray's web site from Kewell telling the fans that they haven't seen the best of him yet. I'm sure he must have said that at some stage.

Not only those three. Besides Agger, Skrtel and Johnson seem to be wearing casts on their arms alot. Are they practicing wristlocks or something?

Perhaps throw the whole team into a judo class to learn how to break fall properly?

I really dont understand the vitriol directed towards Kewell from our own support. Does anyone really thinking he didn't want to make it here? The lad was injured on a near constant basis, but its not like he was self harming. Anytime he started to get a run in the team he got injured again. Its hardly his fault. Or have I forgotten something horrible he did?
