Touching the ball at a direct free kick.

I can see the benefit if you're close to the goal, but that free kick yesterday was just the right distance for a direct one.

Give that man a cigar.

As long as refs aren't strict in enforcing the ten yard rule (including not moving a fucking inch towards the ball until the it's played), there is no point in doing it as long as Gerrard is shooting. Riise shooting is another matter, but he shouldn't be allowed to anyway.

It creates a different angle to strike the ball from.

The defence is set up to stop a direct shot on goal and if you're opting for power then it needs to be moved to created a gap.

Agreed. We don't have anyone who can strike the freekick with a cultured foot except Aurelio really so the preferred is to change the angle and let Gerrard batter the piss out of it.

Eh?

So it's not worth talking about?

I agree with the original post. I KNEW when that free kick was about to be rolled yesterday that it would come to nothing.

Sometimes it works out well, but they were well onto it and we should have just shot.

Not really, Ian. It's like people moaning about short corners. Seriously, do you think that a manager as obsessive about the fine details of the game as Rafa hasn't analysed various success rates from different types of set piece? But the good folk of TLW, with their many varied experiments and analyses, have come to the conclusion that 'our set pieces are fucking shit.'

They are though. But I put that down to the inability of our players to strike a ball accurately and consistently rather than the manager.
