The offending FHM article.

 

Under the heading “World of disasters”.

 

“The world is full of wonders, but is also plagued with evil. FHM examines the events that have made us shudder….”

 

“The Hillsborough tragedy. The tragedy: The FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989, had emotions running high among fans, so there was a sizable police presence at the stadium. Forest fans entered the stadium while the Liverpool fans waited outside, to prevent scuffles. But for this match, over 5,000 Liverpool fans were crammed against the turnstiles, and those who managed to make it through were sweaty and distressed from the crush. It was soon clear that the turnstiles couldn’t deal with the crowd, so a police officer opened a side gate into the stadium. The gate led into the already packed terraces, a concrete, stepped, standing-only area. The crowd surging from behind crushed the fans down the terraces, against the steel fences around the pitch; others lost their footing and were trapped beneath the feet of others. The referee stopped the game, and fans on both sides started helping those trapped.

 

The body count: Ninety-six people died, mostly tens and children unable to withstand the crush. Hundreds were horribly injured.

 

The aftermath: Ten years after the event, former superintendant Bernard Murray and former chief superintendant David Duckenfield were cleared of charges of unlawful killing and wilful neglect of public duty. No other charges have been laid.” END Quotes. My words follow.

 

Now the captions to pictures seared in all of our minds.

 

Picture 1 – The picture of hundreds of fans showing the steel mesh at the front of the terrace with many fans – mainly youngsters – being crushed. Caption: “Shoppers waited for the doors to open for the end-of-year sale.”

 

Picture 2 – Distraught man with hands on the cheeks of a prone man. Other scenes of despair in the background. Caption: “Yeah, your glands are really swollen.”

 

Picture 3 – At the Anfield Wall of Remembrance showing the roll of names of the victims. Mother in black, girl of eight or so in lilac holding a rose and, seemingly, pointing at the list. Caption: “Level four, lingerie and kids wear.”

 

Picture 4 – Fans in the upper tier trying to lift the fans from below to safety. Caption: “Get us a beer while you’re there.”

 

Picture 5 – The pitch. Victims laid out on advertising hoardings. Lots of helpers standing, distraught. Caption: “Pitch invaders: lazy.”

 

Picture 6 – Close up of the steel mesh. Youngster crushed on it. Another, older, person also in shot. Caption: “The queue for the Bertie Beetle bag was rough.”

 

There you have it. Wonderful example of antipodean humour, mis-information, poor writing and incredibly poor taste.
