LFC Goalkeepers 2006/07

This is the cloudiest area of our squad for me.

 

At the start of the season, things were crystal. We had Pepe as no 1 and Carson as back up and Dudek seemingly on the way out in the January transfer window.

 

Then in January, we let Scotty go out on loan, after playing him against Luton, but then decide to buy another in David Martin, who is only a year younger than Carson.

 

We also kept hold of Jerzy, when he wanted desperately to leave, instead of keeping Carson and selling him.

 

Now we have Kirkland coming back, but not for long, as we'll take the first offer for him and he'll be gone.

 

That leaves, Carson, Martin as back up for Pepe, neither experienced at the top level. Recent speculation has linked Carson with another year loan move elsewhere.

 

Carson has done ok when he has played, but he's not commanding like Reina, and therefore weakens our defence somewhat with uncertainty. I haven't seen anything of Martin since he signed.

 

Neither will get much first team action unless Reina gets a serious injury, suspended etc and won't get any experience which they need.

 

If something happens to Pepe, can they be relied upon?

 

What happens to Jerzy then? Should we keep hold of him for another season or get another experienced keeper in?

 

Will he want to stay for another season as a bench warmer?

Dudek/Kirkland to go.

 

Anything more than 3 keepers is overkill in this day and age, but if the worst comes to the worst, you get an experienced goalie in on loan a la Paul Jones.

Martin has performed really well this season in the 10 or so reserve games i have seen. Looks a really good prospect. I think Carson is a class keeper too. Dudek and Kirkland both out definitely. But I think its safe to say were safe in that department!!!

To be honest I dont think that Carson is anywhere near as good as Dudek, in a couple of years yes, maybe, I would keep Dudek as our second choice keeper at least for next season.

dont think thats fair on jerzy. he wont want to stay around on the bench, he's already lost his world cup place because of it. he should be sold providing there is a reasonable offer.
