Russia v Ukraine

This one is really interesting, and actually quite instructive for your understanding of the conflict as a whole.

In Ukrainian, the name is Kyiv, pronounced something like "KEEV." In Russian, it's "Kiev," pronounced "KEE-yev." So if you want to give it the name that the local people use, it's Kyiv. If you buy into the idea that the Russians get to run everything in Ukraine (which they did for 70 years in the 1900's, which is why most of us grew up calling it "Kiev"), then you can use the old Kiev pronunciation.

You just won't make any Ukrainian friends by doing so, because they see the "Kiev" thing as just one more sign of Russian domination/extinction of their right to exist.

I remember flying home from one of our first holidays in the Med and kept hearing these calls for flights to Londres and thinking, where the fuck is that?

When we went to Italy, the locals were saying Lee-verpohl. I dont get hung up on how other citizens pronounce city or place names myself.

The Telegraph reporting that some of the Russian battalions are travelling accompanied by a mobile crematorium vehicle. Grim.

Yeah there are pictures on twitter. Putin evidently doesn't want any media of body bags returning home.

Can i ask a silly question what would happen if Ukraine were given NATO membership immediately would that force Putin to pull out his troops ? as i dont see anyother way he does as he wans to end Ukraine sovereignty and rebuild the old USSR.The baltics will be next

NATO will not accept an application for membership from states involved in current border disputes for obvious reasons.

In any event, Id say Putin would see it as a red rag to a bull.

Aside from it never going to happen (the immediate NATO membership) and accepting all that would follow it would be pure fantasy, it would essentially mean Russia had a choice to make 1) leave 2) be blown to bits in a war with all of Europe and NA and forced to leave.

As for the Baltics, they are all NATO members and have been for the better part of 20 years. Putin hasn't done shit about those, why? Because of NATO.

Id say he hasnt done shit for 20 years over the Baltic states because the Russian military would deffo have got its arse kicked and, there havent been weak US Presidents.

Putin's been rebuilding his miltary while NATO has, depending who you believe, been chronically underfunded by European states.

Add in Biden looks weak at home and abroad, made a complete cluster fuck over the Afghan withdrawal and Putin decides to act while he thinks the odds favour him.

Just my view.

I have compiled a list of sanctions that will have Russians up in mutiny against their leader. Feel free to add to it and share it with the duffers in government...

  • No access to European Counterstrike Global Offensive servers.
  • No access to FIFA multiplayer mode.
  • No European travel.
  • No entry into Sporting competitions for Russian participants or teams
  • No sporting events on Russian territory
  • No exports to Russia

SORTED!

NATO's combined military power is more than the world has ever seen in one combined force. It's so much stronger than Russia that we'd have to get deep into fractions if we started to compare them.

I think the biggest threat to Russia comes from China, not the west.

China have their shit together, the people are fully behind the regime and ideology, and they share a big border with Russia.

Russia are unstable, their people are more westernised but they live in fear of their government and abide the rigged elections.  A Glastnos (sp?) leader to replace Putin could easily pull the rug on the KGB nonces once and for all, and that then adds a big troublesome US-friendly border for China to worry about.

Whereas a China incursion on Russia could be quick, cost millions of lives, but mostly contained between two countries that the west would be content to watch from afar.  But in doing so it would create a socialist state of enormous size.

As a standing army and until major military assets would be flown in from the US, I dont think so. NATO's assets are scattered around mainland Europe. Virtually no UK assets are based in Europe any more. Half the German airforce's front line jets are grounded. Many European nations havent met their NATO spending requirements for years until Trump took Stoltenberg to task over it.

Like for like, Id agree NATO equipment is superior to that of Russia. The problem being mobilisation of NATO's major assets.
