New Order and The Smiths ARE two of the greatest bands of all time.

I like New Order and The Smiths were decent too but neither of these are anywhere near the greatest rock bands in the world. They shouldn't even be near the best in Britain except for Stig's 'hot balls.'

Although certainly a factor, I wouldn’t measure greatness on record sales alone.

Popularity isn’t necessarily aligned to greatness although, granted, in a good few examples on the list of highest selling bands, the two do go hand in hand.

I would add ‘influence’ to the mix. We’ve had bands in this tournament; The Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen, the two that spring to mind as I write, who have nowhere near the number of sales but are regarded as having been hugely influential on many others. There’s bands that have sold shitloads but couldn’t really say the same.

Longevity is also linked to commercial success. This probably isn’t achieved without the Band having something about them but genuine greatness? In some cases, I’m not so sure.

There are other bands who’s flame only burned for a short time, so don’t trouble the scorer in terms of overall record sales but might still have a claim on greatness based on the smallest output. Perhaps The Stone Roses might fit into this category although the counter argument might be great album, but not enough of a catalogue to be genuinely considered a great band.

In the end it probably should just be about individual preference. If you prefer Aqua to The Beatles then that’s up to you. Clearly everyone else has the right to an opinion that you’re bat shit crazy but it’s still your preference to have.
