Football legend Jimmy Armfield has died at the age of 82 following a battle with cancer, Blackpool FC has confirmed.

Armfield made a club record 627 appearances for the Seasiders, was capped 43 times by England, and went on to manage Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.

Major voice of my football youth his his stint on 5live

I guess most people will be familiar with him from 5 Live where he was excellent as a co-commentator. I remember him often working alongside Alan Green where he was the understated and rational counterpoint to Green's more outspoken and hysterical delivery.

A lot of people won't be aware that he was a member of England's 1966 World Cup squad, and that he took Leeds to a European Cup final as manager.

He always came across as a real gent, and he always spoke well of Liverpool.

heard him not long ago and thought, nice one, Jimmy is still getting the call. sad to hear of this today. old school style which was always refreshing to know still had a place in the modern world. bad week with that and Cyrille. 2 footballing greats no longer with us is sad news and large parts of our football upbringing gone.

A proper football man, who i grew up listening to on the radio. Will be sadly missed.

To lose someone as knowledgeable and articulate as Jimmy when we have to put up with the wisdom of Savage Owen and Co makes you realise the world is a truly cruel place

WOW........Very sad to hear the news . Will miss that voice, his insightfulness and love for the game with no hidden agenda . Rest in Peace

Just seen this on Twitter :

Howard Wilkinson to a press conference: "How many caps have you lot won?"

Daily express reporter Jimmy Armfield sat quietly at the back: "43 actually, Howard"

A gentleman with a mischievous sense of humour.

He would have had a WC winners medal had he not been injured.

Even I'm too old to recall him playing but loved his radio commentary. One of the few great footballers that made a great writer and broadcaster, Think of the polar opposite of Garth Crooks and you'll find Jimmy Armfield. Sad loss RIP
