  • 1 month later...

Now employed till March next year. Last couple of extensions there have been rumours well in advance.

No rumours whatsoever at the moment so I suspect this might be us done this time. They have changed our contract type so at least we can apply for internal jobs now, that said today is my last shift on the team I ended up on because I've told them I don't want the extra responsibility (or to be more precise I'm sick of being treat like shit and having loads of extra crap dumped on me without any reward for it) so as of Monday I am back to bog standard bottom rung of the ladder work again.

Thoroughly fucked off with it all at the moment though, if it weren't for the job market being so shit up here I reckon I would have walked this week. Least optimistic I have been for a hell of a long time.

Yep, life is shit. No jobs of any interest and in the end you always end up being shit on.

Then women want blokes who like their jobs and are "driven". I asked one to explain what driven was and she couldn't. She just wanted a bloke with lots of dosh.

Started a job last month (my first job ever) and I realised when I got here that I’m actually doing the work of two people who had been shit canned in London (their salaries where £56,000 combined) mine isn't even half that.

I've done both their jobs, faster and to a better standard than they did so far this month and the organisation are buzzing with me like - so they've decided to send me to London in October for 4 days of training for a promotion in December.

So like somebody said before, my jobs very safe but it's also very shit. Not sure how this promotion will play out, it's £4,000 per year more but I’m guessing the work load will be increased.

I run a small computer shop here in Wales, and retail has nosedived over the last 18 months. Still getting the repair jobs in, so most of the weekly takings now are purely labour charges + odd parts but still. Fuck me, things are getting tight.

So many more people around here are getting their existing PCs patched up rather than buying new ones, and the 2 local supermarkets are doing heavily discounted printers, CDs/DVDs/memory sticks and various other "mainstay" consumables, so finding it hard to compete with those on price.

One thing that has gone up is how many "I bought this off eBay and I can't get it to work" jobs I'm getting, shortly followed by me telling them "Sorry mate, it's fucked." If only they would have bought it from their local friendly computer shop in the first place...

Well, exactly. Another example of how the internet is ruining everything.

You should still charge them an idiot tax.

I'm in a serious pickle at the moment. I quite my job at the end of March because I was meant to be going to Toronto to work for a year. That didn't work out, and now I'm back on the job search. I just don't have a clue what I want to do, and think I'd rather a completely different change of scene, perhaps working abroad. Anyone have any sort of advice or guidance that might be able to give me the motivation to start looking, or where to start looking?

Moral dilemma. Say your best customer comes in (best customer as in brings you a constant flow of work) and while you are fixing his machine as usual he has some *bad* porn on it... CP, Mr Hands, Brazilian fart porn...

Would you:

a) Report him to police. He's a bad nonce

b) Blackmail him and live like a king

c) Let him off. Mr Hands is boss.

You must have found dodgy stuff on people's machines.

So the courses aren't a pre-requisite if you were wanting to teach English in a different country?

They are in Germany but it all depends on what type of teaching you will be doing (private is obviously different) and for which firm, can't speak for other countries.

Ohhh I do. HDDs is a common one. "I bought this off the interwebz and I can't install my OS". Run the HDD diagnostics, take a pic of all those lovely bad sectors the diags reveal, show them and charge £20 or so depending on how long it took the diagnostics to run. That'll learn 'em.

A favourite trick is pointing out just how old their supposedly "new" HDD is. "See that date code? 2007..." And don't get me started on those Magnetic Data Technologies refurbs... One of my suppliers keeps trying to sell me MDT drives, I'm sick of telling him to sod off.

Fair enough, sometimes they are correctable but give it back with the caveat "Look, I found xxx amount of bad sectors which were repairable. It could just be one of those things and you'll be OK, it could be the start of failure, in which case if more come back shortly your fucked."

Haha. Mr Hands. Neigh.

Not found anything illegal yet, but some right weird stuff from the most suprising of characters. Local pillar of the community with a fondness for Veronica Moser kind of thing. No, not the shooting victim.. If you don't recognise the name, don't google it from work.

I can't really be arsed searching stuff out, just get the job done and next, but when you get the cagey ones who insist "You don't go through all the files, do you?" you can't help but wonder... However, some of them are quite open about it. "15Gb of squirters on there mate if you want a copy."

Anyway. A. Got it all worked out, one of my mates is a copper, had a word with him about it and the deal is to give him a bell, off-record for now, and take it from there.

The pay for teaching English in Germany is pretty naff unless you land a job at the University or a decent school. The private firms like Berlitz have cornered the market as far as company/private courses go and pay a pittance. If you were wanting to get into one of the better paid jobs for teaching English then you would need specific qualifications and be able to speak/read German pretty fluently and in most cases write it. Like i said above, i can't speak for other countries. It would be advisable to go to a country where you have a knowledge of their language imo, it would be a major advantage.

Get some tart pregnant and you'll lose the will to live and any aspirations for a job you enjoy.

Teaching abroad deffo sounds like the thing to do, got a couple of mates doing it in China and they love it. Another one did a two day Tefl course, was only 200 notes and gets offers for work all over, camps in Italy etc. Working abroad for a year or two would be a good way to get out of dodge until things pick up in the job market.
