Boxing 2024

Ryan Garcia twice tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Ostarine in urine tests related to his upset majority decision victory over Devin Haney on April 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, multiple sources with knowledge of the test results told Fight Freaks Unite on Wednesday.

A sample Garcia provided on April 19 and another one on April 20, most likely given shortly after pay-per-view bout, both came back positive for the banned substance on Wednesday. The fighters had also been randomly tested in the weeks leading up to the fight.

Ostarine, which has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list since 2008 and in 2022 was officially listed by WADA as an anabolic agent, is used to assist athletic performance by helping build muscle mass, burn fat, increase stamina and give the athlete the ability to recover quickly from strenuous work.

VADA issued a letter on Wednesday detailing the results to those involved in the fight, which was supposed to be Garcia challenging for Haney’s WBC junior welterweight title. However, although Garcia scored three knockdowns on left hooks and won the on two scorecards, Garcia was not eligible to win the belt because he weighed in at 143.2 pounds, well over the 140-pound limit. Haney remains the WBC titleholder.

In addition to the Ostarine being present in the April 19 and April 20 urine samples, Garcia’s sample on April 19 “also screened positive but was not confirmed for 19-Norandrosterone pending IRMS (isotope ratio mass spectrometry) analysis currently being run.” That is also a banned PED.

As is standard, Garcia has 10 days to ask for his B sample to tested at his expense. In virtually all instances the B sample comes back with the same results as the A sample.

Haney was obviously upset by the disclosure.

“We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice,”

Haney said in a statement given to Fight Freaks Unite. “I’ve always been an advocate for clean fighting and this is an example of such. Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke. We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living. You don’t play boxing.

“This puts the fight in a completely different light. Despite the disadvantage, I still fought on my shield and got back up! People die in this sport. This isn’t a joking matter.”

Garcia denied using any PEDs in a social media video and in several posts.

“I’m here to address this bull-fucking-shit claim that I cheated,” Garcia stated in an Instagram video. “Everyone knows that I don’t cheat. What can I say? Why didn’t they come out with this before the fight, if they found it before? Why would they let me step into the ring as a cheater?

“I come out with the victory and then they post this. These are people that are trying to attack me for whatever reason. No weapon against me shall prosper.

“I’ve never taken a steroid in my life’ I don’t even know where to get steroids. I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat his ass. Fuck outta here.”

There would be no way for a sample taken the day before and right after the bout to have had the results known immediately as Garcia suggested.

“Ryan has put out multiple statements denying knowingly using any banned substances — and we believe him,” Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia’s promoter, said in a statement. “We are working with his team to determine how this finding came to be and will address this further once we conclude that process.”

Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs for now), 25, of Los Angeles, most likely will face a hearing before the New York State Athletic Commission that in all likelihood will end with Garcia being suspended and the result of the fight being changed to no contest.

That means the win would be erased from Garcia’s record and Haney (31-1, 15 KOs for now), 25, of Las Vegas, the former undisputed lightweight champion, would see his first loss be removed from his record.

Boxing and all fight sports need to sort this stuff out. Garcia will still live of this as a win and it still elevates him. All fight purses should be kept from fighters awaiting the results of drug tests. If you fail it goes to your opponent unless you can prove it was a painted supplement etc.

You should also be on the hook for a private class action suite from fans that paid to see the fight.

And you should be banned from all combat sports for life

Only something like this that would bankrupt a fighter amd stop them earning again is strong enough to put off fighters.

It's harsh but it's not a game performance enhancing drugs in combat sports are potentially a death sentence for your opponent

Gutted:

https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/40078163/artur-beterbiev-injured-title-bout-vs-dmitry-bivol-postponed

Artur Beterbiev suffered a ruptured meniscus and his undisputed light heavyweight championship fight vs. Dmitry Bivol on June 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has been postponed, it was announced Friday.

Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, told ESPN a replacement opponent is being sought for Bivol on the June 1 card.

Beterbiev (20-0, 20 KOs) will undergo knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined until at least September, sources said. The hope is for Beterbiev-Bivol to be rescheduled later this year.

Alalshikh announced that the stacked undercard that features five boxers promoted by Matchroom vs. five Queensberry fighters will proceed June 1 as planned.

The series of fights is highlighted by a bout between former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder vs. Zhilei Zhang. Both boxers are coming off losses to Joseph Parker.

Wilder needs an impressive performance to move on to a planned Aug. 3 boutwith Jared Anderson in Los Angeles.

Filip Hrgovic will meet Daniel Dubois for the vacant IBF heavyweight title, and Ray Ford will defend his WBA featherweight title against Nick Ball. The other two fights are Ammo Williams-Hamzah Sheeraz and Willy Hutchinson-Craig Richards.

But the most anticipated fight of all was the long-awaited summit meeting between Beterbiev and Bivol.

Bivol (22-0, 11 KOs) is ESPN's No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer while Beterbiev is No. 6. Bivol owns a victory over boxing's top star, Canelo Alvarez, and holds the WBA title at 175 pounds.

Beterbiev, the WBO, WBC and IBF champion at 175 pounds, is ESPN's No. 1 light heavyweight (Bivol is No. 2).

Beterbiev, 39, and Bivol, 33, both are from Russia, though Beterbiev now lives in Quebec. That's where he returned in January with a seventh-round TKO victory over former super middleweight champion Callum Smith, a win that kept him on a collision course with Bivol.

The victory came in Beterbiev's first action since January 2023, when he scored a seventh-round TKOover Anthony Yarde.

Beterbiev is boxing's only champion with a 100% KO rate.

Bivol, though, owns the most impressive win between the pair with his May 2022 decision victory over Alvarez. It was a dominant performance that displayed Bivol's elite jab, footwork and ring smarts. Beterbiev also possesses an excellent jab and is arguably boxing's most dangerous picker.

The matchup is among the most anticipated in the history of the light heavyweight division and presents a fascinating clash of styles: Bivol is a classical boxer, Beterbiev is a boxer-puncher.

Bivol's last fight came in December in Riyadh, where he scored a shutout decision over Lyndon Arthur.

Canelo looked fairly sharp, but Munguia was tailor made for him. Ridiculous that he’s not fighting Benavidez, hopefully those lovely Saudi’s can sort that out.

So hard to split Usyk, Inoue and Crawford.

They are collectively the best fight in the world.

Inoue is my pick.

Loma vs Kambosos is coming up in Perth I'm looking forward to that.

I personally shade Usyk, but can’t argue against the other two.

The Price v McCaskill fight was shocking.

It reminded me of the video of the two women scrapping in the Bar and Grill.

How McCaskill was a unified champion is beyond me, she didn't look like she had ever seen a boxing bout.

I usually stay up for fights overnight in the states/other places with crazy timezones but gonna stick Loma Kambosos on record and catch it in the morning and try not to come across the result beforehand.

Reckon Loma just about wins every round.

Loma’s still got it.

Never lost it. Just like he never lost that Haney fight.

The way he hops in and out of range and shifts around remains the best of any fighter out there with the exception of maybe Usyk.

He is a prick. He was a nobody as a fighter and tries to steal some of his son's shine.

The young lad ate the headbutt like a champ. No amount of screaming from John or Shane will change the fact that his Dad has come off as a cunt.
