Paul Elliott quits Kick It Out after racially abusing Richard Rufus

Uh-oh, more trouble in paradise. Still, I'm sure Elliott will be seen as the more acceptable face of racism, rather than a mixed-race foreigner "convicted" by an FA panel of legal overlords, because, well, they thought he seemed shifty.

Paul Elliott: Anti-racism campaigner quits FA role over "discriminatory abusive comments" - Mirror Online

A statement read: "The FA has today accepted the resignation of Paul Elliott from all roles representing the organisation.

"This follows a conversation in which discriminatory abusive comments were made to Richard Rufus."

Bernstein said: "I wish to thank Paul for his dedicated and unstinting work, particularly in the area of anti-racism.

"I am saddened by this turn of events and it is with regret that we accept Paul's resignation.

"However, the use of discriminatory language is unacceptable regardless of its context and in effect has made Paul's position untenable."

Elliott released a statement via Kick It Out explaining his decision.

He said: "Earlier this week, a former friend and business colleague made public an SMS text message I sent him, in which I used a term which is widely known as being derogatory to my own community.

"I regret using it; it is inappropriate and not part of my everyday vocabulary.

"As an advocate of high standards of public behaviour, and integrity in public life, I know the use of this word sends out mixed messages and contradicts my position as a Kick It Out trustee.

"I will continue to be active in other projects in what I believe to be a true and just cause."

And this is what happens when you insist on absolute 'zero tolerance.' Every little use of words, even between 'friends' gets blown up out of proportion.

Ive no sympathy with elliot over this. His type instigated this absolute 'zero tolerance' idiocy.

San Don is right to highlight the counter productive hysterical zeal which comes out all too often when discussing racism.

The OP is wrong to draw parallels between Suarez and Elliott. Elliott did the decent thing, quickly, Suarez, and ourselves grossly mishandled the racism episode from start to finish.

Elliott has always struck me as a decent man who talks well about the game and who played when bilious racism was still commonplace on the terraces.

For me the problem is that Suarez lapse, Elliott’s private text and pernicious racist beliefs such as those favoured by the Nazi’s, the South African Apartheid regime and pre Martin Luther King southern America are all lumped together as one, when they are not, and the noble cause of racial tolerance suffers consequently.

Given he'd previously appaluded the FA's 'zero-tolerance' stance on the use of language that could be deemed to be racially offensive, it could be argued that he was hoisted by his own petard and had no choice but to resign or be sacked. There's little decent about accepting the inevitable. What if the Suarez case had never arose, and Elliot had never expressed the views he did because of it - would he have 'done the decent thing' and resigned? Or would he have fought his corner on the grounds of context?

This zero-tolerance stance was always going to be a potential banana skin (pun not intended).

I remember early years at uni we were told not to use the word black to describe items. Even using terms such as black coffee or black pen were not allowed.

This is the first time I've heard anyone claim personal experience of shit like this. It's usually Daily Mail-minded buffoons talking as idf the whole world is like that.

I hope you told any fuckwits who tried to stop the correct use of adjectives to fuck right off, or they'd get a black eye.
