When I first bought my pc I never got a hard copy of windows, when I had to buy a new harddrive I had a mare with the fucker so I just bought windows 7 upgrade disk and it worked fine.

Now though I had to replace my PSU and for some reason it cleared my operating system too so I've reinstalled the windows upgrade disk and the computer is accessible but now says its not a genuine copy and won't take the product key. Any ideas? I really don't want to be buying another copy with Christmas coming up, to be honest I'm pissed at having to buy it at all.

Has your computer got the original product key sticker on it? If it has you can call microsoft and they do some magic to activate it. Think the number is on the activation screen.

If you didn't get a windows disk then there is usually a hidden partition on your drive which allows you to reinstall. Worth bearing in mind for the future.

Try entering using the telephone key system. This happened to me once with a brand new copy of Windows 7, a genuine copy. Worked after entering the code into the phone system. Maybe a ploy by M$ to get a few more pennies out of its customers.
