Report: Aberdeen leading the race to sign Williams on loan

Aberdeen have expressed a deal of interest in taking Rhys Williams north of the border for the upcoming season.

After displaying some great promise in the Covid hit season of 2020/1, the career of the 22 year-old has significantly stalled in the last two seasons where he has had two underwhelming loan spells at Swansea and Blackpool respectively.

Williams was brought back to the club in January as cover for Nat Phillips if he departed during the winter window, however that ended up not coming to pass and it meant that Williams was without any options in terms of senior Football and he had to keep his fitness level up by playing for the U/21s in Premier League 2.

Barring another catastrophic run of injuries in the heart of Liverpools defence, it is largely seen as fact that Williams is surplus to requirements and on the lookout for a club where he can play on a consistent basis.

This is where Aberdeen come into play, a team that is on the upward curve having finished third last season in the Scottish Premiership and a 15 point improvement on the previous campaign.

Football Insider report that fresh from signing another academy graduate in Leighton Clarkson on a permanent deal after a excellent 2022/23 campaign, manager Barry Robson sees Williams as the sort of player which could improve the team further.

There is believed to be other suitors interested in the defender who is under contract until June 2026 but the Dons have stolen a march on those teams by making direct contact with Liverpool.

Another loan is pointless. We are never keeping him. He didn't even stand out being on loan at Blackpool and he's hardly going to develop any further by playing for a mid table Scottish club.

The time to sell him and Phillips was after we got 4th with both of them playing in the PL. The club probably got too greedy and wanted stupid amounts so no one was interested.
