Ian Ayre really is something special when he can make Rick Parry look competent.

FSG have made enough balls ups in their time here, but continually promoting this fool is up there at the top.

Why is this club always run by idiots? When will we ever get a proper structure in place?

If anything good comes from last night's fiasco then let's hope it's a proper Football Administrator/CEO being imminent. We can't go on as we are.

Well said.

Let Ayre negotiate with potential sponsors and the like. Let him do what he is clearly good at. But in footballing matters he looks totally and utterly out of his depth. We need a strong hard nosed shrewd bastard running this club. Someone who gives off authority. Ayre isn't that man.

I said all summer having Ayre in charge of transfers will end in tears - the man is well out of his depth as MD let alone having him taking over Comolli's job as well when he hasn't got a fucking clue about football.

The worst thing about this transfer window has been poor planning and communication, and the buck stops with Ayre for that. Just like with his totally inept handling of the Suarez case last season.

Rodgers is still a rookie - he needs a top football administrator to help him. He probably regrets turning down working under a DOF now, but promoting Ayre instead was cretinous.

I said last night i blame Ayre entirely for this mess.

He should have resigned at 9am this morning. He failed to do what someone in his job is expected to do therefore he simply shouldn't be doing it. Simple as that.

Broker sponsorship deals is all well and good - dealing with agents and Premiership chairmen is a whole different story - and Ayre has been found out for the wannabe he is. I don't absolve the owners at all, they are culpable in their own rights - but this unmitigated disaster from the last 36 hours falls solely at the feet of the man who's job it is to keep the football club competitive - and that man is Ian Ayre. If a resignation wasn't tendered this morning he should be sacked this afternoon after he fumbles his excuses to whoever wants answers to this mess.

Absolutely shocking turn of events. Im beyond fuming about it.

Couldn't agree more with the comments on this thread so far. He's always struck me as a complete amateur and is embarrassing to have in charge. This latest episode is just another example of what we've already seen.

Granted we've done a few good commercial deals in the recent past but I don't think he's exactly worked miracles. We have had one of the largest global followings for years but had always left this chronically underexploited. It's not much of an exaggeration to say that pretty much anyone could have come in and managed to get us a greater number of commercial deals and for larger amounts. It certainly didn't take some sort of business genius, especially when our biggest rivals have been disappearing beyond the horizon whilst showing us for years exactly how to do it.

Also, even if he had proven himself to be some sort of business genius I'd still not be entirely comfortable with him because he's an embarrassment to the club. He comes across very poorly in interviews; he doesn't seem to have any confidence or gravitas and it's not a great leap to imagine that agents and other clubs' chiefs must see him coming and rub their hands. To illustrate the point clearly, what on earth was he playing at when we signed Sahin last week? I don't care what day of the week it is, if you're representing Liverpool Football Club in any sort of professional capacity then you act and behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Part of this means that you always look impeccable when you're in public; if you're on the business side of the club then you're in a suit, shirt and tie, no excuses. You most certainly do not turn up to have your photo taken for the world's media wearing a terrible shirt with scruffy jeans, like you're desperately trying to be a 'trendy Dad'. It might seem like a small thing to get worked-up about but it's the small things that set the tone for everything else and are often harder to get wrong than they are to get right.

We need a footballing man. I don't think Ayre should be sacked, he can continue to work as MD. He just shouldn't have responsibility for anything other than business stuff. He's a good business guy, there's little doubting that. He's done some decent deals.

We do need our own David Dein, though. Preferably called David Dein.

He should never have been moved from his commercial job. He did a good job in that in increasing revenues, but he's had about 3 promotions since and been out of his depth in all of them. I'd put a lot of the Suarez mess last season down to him, as he was left in charge.

He loves getting his face on the telly and his picture taken when there's a new signing or something, but when the shit hits the fan he's nowhere to be seen. His leadership is woeful, as his competence. He's a PR disaster for the owners, the "trophies don't matter" interview after Kenny went is still fresh in the mind.

Is AFL that Aussie 'punching the ball' type game? The one with three different goals, a big set and two small ones? It's like watching rugby whilst being stoned.

EXCLUSIVE

By Richard Buxton

Liverpool will restart their search for a new managing director next week following a disastrous transfer deadline day at the club, Goal.com can reveal.

Owners Fenway Sports Group have revived their plans after Ayre was deemed culpable for Brendan Rodgers being left with only two recognised strikers when the transfer window closed on Friday night after their pursuit of Clint Dempsey fell through.

Ayre was charged with negotiating with Fulham for the striker, who had made no secret of his desire to move to Anfield and was greatly admired by the club's American owners, but refused to match Tottenham Hotspur's £6 million valuation which saw him move across the capital.

Rodgers was assured prior to allowing Andy Carroll to join West Ham United on a season-long loan that a deal for a replacement attacker was in place but the move for Dempsey, as well as that for Chelsea hitman Daniel Sturridge, failed to materialise.

LIVERPOOL LATEST

Goal.com understands that this latest setback is the final straw for Anfield chiefs and has validated the long-standing concerns of principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner, the club's senior figureheads about the Merseyside-born businessman.

The pair both harboured misgivings about appointing Ayre to oversee the day-to-day running of the club following Christian Purslow's departure in late 2010, but were won over by his work within their commercial department, which saw him promoted in March 2011.

However, his controversial quotes on plans for Liverpool to lead a breakaway from the Premier League's overseas television rights deal prompted strong disapproval from their peers and set in motion what soon became a season-long PR blunder last term.

At the height of Luis Suarez's race row, Ayre sanctioned the publishing of a forthright statement on Liverpool's official website in response to the striker being hit with an eight-game suspension for abusing Patrice Evra, which contained several inaccuracies and was widely criticised.

His refusal to intervene in the infamous T-shirt debacle which took place before Liverpool's visit to Wigan the following night continued to plant seeds of doubt in the minds of the owners, who forced him to join Suarez and then manager Kenny Dalglish in issuing a public apology after the Uruguay international refused to shake hands with Evra ahead of a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

It is currently unclear whether Ayre will be allowed to return to his original role as commercial director at Anfield, where he has been succeeded by Billy Hogan, who arrived from subsidiary Fenway Sports Management at the end of May, despite helping successfully negotiate deals for Liverpool's array of new commercial partners this summer.

As long as he doesnt let his soon do dodgy deals with us like he did with Arsenal then I'd be up for it.

Thats it,and given the strikers we've been left with after last nights mess we will need 3 different goals in order to get any goals.
