Volumes 3-15 of Judge Dredd

The Walking Dead (currently about 13 0r 14 graphic novels in this ongoing zombie series)

Batman: Year One

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (greatest comic ever written)

The Punisher (Garth Ennis run)

Sandman (think there's about 10 of these)

Preacher (think there's about 10 of these too)

Hellblazer (probably loads of these, don't have them all)

There's probably millions more great comics/ graphic novels, but the above are the ones I've read and loved.

I find most of the Marvel/ DC ongoing continuity far too complicated and daunting, so I've never bothered.

Got into graphic novels pretty late in life but I've just ordered series 11-12 and 13 of the walking dead, Preacher Book One, Criminal and Chew. The last three were impulse buys. Are they any good? I'm also waiting for the next release of The Boys.

Managed to get the hard cover of this for £4 today, gonna have a read of it tonight and tomorrow, looks good so far.

Excellent book. Try to get hold of Matt Wagner's other Batman books - they're all really good.

Preacher and Chew are both excellent, especially Preacher which is one of my favourite series of all time. Never read Criminal or Just a Pilgrim, have to let us know if you think they're worth getting

Sut - I have both Wagners Batman books from the Dark Moon Rising series and have Faces from Legends of the Dark Knight, think from looking at Wiki the only one of his i'm missing is The Riddle Factory?

He also did a pair of Batman/Grendel crossovers which are excellent and collected in a single volume.

Just read the first 3 books of Locke and Key. Absolutely fantastic series and I can't wait for the TV show (just hope they don't fuck it up).

EDIT: looks like they did fuck it up as the pilot was made but not green lit for a series. Ah well, it was Fox so I'd have boycotted it anyway.

Batman: The Long Halloween

Batman: A Dark Victory

Batman Year One

Dark Knight Returns

The Walking Dead

Superman Red Son

Batman The Killing Joke

I'm just getting into The Boys, dropped by DC originally but is a really good, violent story.

I posted this list further back in the thread.

The best trades to pick up to get an idea of Batmans background are

Year One

The Long Halloween

Dark Victory

Hush

A Lonely Place of Dying

A Death in the Family

Killing Joke and The Man who Laughs are awesome as well.

In all honesty, you're best almost not bothering getting too caught up the back-story baring the very basics (Bruce Wayne see's parents killed, decides to become vigilante)

DC rebooted all their comics at the start of September meaning now is a pretty good time to start buying them as there won't be alot of back-story to catch up on.

Batman is the greatest comic character ever, so it's a good place to start

Buy the following:

Batman Year One - Frank Miller

Killing Joke - Moore/ Bolland

The Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller (one of the greatset things I have ever read, book or comic)

The Long Halloween

Arkham Asylum - Morrison again, with amazing art by Dave McKean

All great comics, but you won't get much character history from The Dark Knight Returns or Serious House on Serious Earth.

Lee: I get all mine from Forbidden Planet or Amazon. There's alot to be found on e-bay as well if you're not bothered about 2nd hand.

Excellent stuff Lee, in Year One and Killing Joke you've got the best origin stories for Batman and Joker. Maybe if you like them try Robin Year One and Catwoman Year One.

If you're going with Animated movies as well i'd definitely recommend Under the Red Hood and Justice League New Frontier but you've got more than enough to keep you going for a while.

Happy reading/watching and keep us informed on what you think, wish I was able to read some of these classics for the first time again.

Don't really know about the DVDs/ cartoons and don't really care, but you really do HAVE TO buy Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" in one complete graphic novel.

The 1989 one, not the the inferior (but still ace) sequel.

He kicks Superman's arse into next week in one bit.

Then avoid everyone for a few hours, read it, be blown away, and then read it again.

It is truly one of the greatest pieces of literature of the last 30 years.

Thankyou Chick.

I have pretty narrow tastes (and limited room in my house) with regard to comics, and it rarely goes beyond 2000AD and Batman, but I make exceptions for genius like Preacher, John Constantine, Sandman, and zombies.

I love Spidey, but don't have any of his stuff, and I have a problem with most of the DC/ Marvel spandex brigade. Basically, I can't really be arsed with it.

But Batman. Well, that's different.
