Liverpool footballer Roberto Firmino has been charged with drink-driving after being arrested on Christmas Eve.

The 25-year-old forward was arrested after his car was stopped in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Saturday, police said.

The Brazil international is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on 31 January.

The court appearance date is scheduled for the same day that Liverpool face Chelsea at Anfield.

Liverpool signed the forward from Hoffenheim on a five-year deal for about £29m in June last year.

He played in last week's win against Everton at Goodison Park.

A Liverpool spokesperson said the club would not be commenting on the issue until the legal process had concluded.

What is the requirement for being referred to court? If he was just over the limit would it go to court? I'm willing to keep an open mind and wait to see more details.

 

On a related note, the club should have a policy in place that says absolutely no drinking and driving. There's too much scope to miscalculate or think you will be fine. There's loads of cabs. Help the local economy.

 

Some people think it's fine to have one or two and drive. Increasingly even that is being frowned upon. I'd like to see the club on the right side of that with a clear no drink-drive policy. Who knows, maybe that's what we have and he did the wrong thing, both by the club and the law.

 

Either way, more details are needed. Hopefully it won't be as bad as it might be, and he will adjust what he does in future in light of this chastening experience.
