In Jan 2004 Barcelona were languishing in lower midtable, they'd not long signed Ronaldinho but things weren't quite working out.

Then they signed Davids in January and he had an amazing impact and they eventually finished 2nd. After that the rest is as they say history.

Now we have a natural leader at the helm a similar impact signing could work wonders.... a catalyst that sparks the rest of the team into at the least playing to the level of their abilities. any team in midtable that can string a good set of consecutive wins together will find themselves back in european contention

Just slightly over one week remains in the January transfer window, and the last few days are set to be a frenzy for Kenny Dalglish, Damien Comolli and the new FSG owners as they look to improve Liverpool's squad with world-class talent.

Liverpool has been linked with all sorts of players, though strikers, wide players and defenders have been tipped as priorities.

Some moves for world-class players -- including a certain Uruguayan striker -- are close to becoming realities, but the market remains unpredictable and wide open.

Surely though, Liverpool supporters will have some shiny new toys to be excited about come February.

Luis Suarez Atop List of Top 10 Liverpool Transfer Targets - Top 10 - NESN.com

10. Stephen Warnock, Aston Villa — Warnock may not be the sexiest transfer option, but there’s a lot to be said for bringing in a proven left back who has represented England internationally and came up through the Liverpool youth system. It should also be noted that Warnock was part of Aston Villa’s impressive back four last season — one that allowed the fourth-fewest goals in 2009-10. Most importantly, he’s a whole lot better than Paul Konchesky.

9. Lacina Traore, CFR Cluj – What kind of player would make the best striking partner for Fernando Torres? Most would answer that a tall, physical striker who can hold the ball up and win headers to place at the Spaniard’s feet would best fit the bill. There are few better candidates than the 6-foot-8 Traore, who has already impressed in the Champions League at just 20-years-old — pretty good for one of Liverpool’s “backup plans.”

8. Stewart Downing, Aston Villa — Who has been the leading scorer at Villa Park this season? The answer will soon enough be Darren Bent, but for now, it is in fact Downing. The 26-year-old former Middlesbrough man has hit the back of the net five times this year — while adding three assists from the left wing. The England international may not be among the world’s best, but as an England international, he surely does have more than a touch of class. Most importantly, he’s a natural left wing — something nobody on Liverpool’s current first team can claim.

7. Charlie Adam, Blackpool — Nobody quite kn0ws exactly how good the 25-year-old Scottish international is, but with every spectacular Premier League performance he notches, it becomes clearer and clearer that he’s more than just the best player on a mediocre team. Adam serves as the emotional leader of a surprising Cinderella squad, and is not only a high-energy, tough-tackling midfielder, but one capable of classy deliveries and goal scoring. Still, it is unclear exactly how much money all of that is worth. Somebody will pay the right price, and he’ll find himself at one of England’s biggest clubs soon enough — whether it is Liverpool or not.

6. Ashley Young, Aston Villa – Think Liverpool could use some pace? We all do, and Young would be an ideal target to fill that void. The 25-year-old England international creates nothing but space on the right side and is a goal threat as well. Furthermore, Villa’s dearth at striker may have put a damper on Young’s scoring numbers. With Torres up front, that’d hardly be the case.

5. Romelu Lukaku, Anderlecht — Would you want “the new Drogba” on your team? We all know the answer. Lukaku had been rumored to be set for a July move to Eastlands, but that seems to no longer be set in stone. Favoring a move to the Premier League, Liverpool look to be in prime position to land the phenom.

4. Ryan Shawcross, Stoke City — Shawcross, Stoke City’s 23-year-old captain, has emerged as one of the toughest defenders in the Premier League this season. Fearless, physically imposing and a threat going forward, Shawcross has the potential to be the successor to Jamie Carragher as the anchor of Liverpool’s back line — but it’s tough to judge quite how much class he actually has.

3. Keisuke Honda, CSKA Moscow – Perhaps no affliction plagued Liverpool more virulently early this season than the complete lack of attacking creativity. Enter Honda, a player who can fit in as an attacking midfielder, wide forward or striker, and features creativity as his finest attribute — world-class set pieces aside. You’d be hard-pressed to find a trickier, pacier player with such a nose for goal than you’d get in Honda — though his ability to adjust to the physicality of the English game is a question to be answered.

2. Fabio Coentrao, Benfica — While Warnock may be the simple solution to Liverpool’s woes at left back, Coentrao would be the home run answer — and he’s keen on the move to boot. In Coentrao, Liverpool would get a 22-year-old star on the rise, already considered among the best left backs in the world. Proof? He won the Portugese League’s Breakthrough Player of the Year award last season, and started for Portugal’s stingy defense at last year’s World Cup.

1A. Eljero Elia, Hamburg — Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard can be absolute show-stoppers, but most Liverpool supporters would agree that the team’s style isn’t quite as exciting as it once was. What better way to fix that than to add one of the world’s most electrifying players? At 23, Elia has already established himself among the true wizards of the game on the wing. With pace and dribbling brilliance abound, he looks nearly certain to develop into a Nani doppelganger.

1. Luis Suarez, Ajax – How does 81 goals in 106 appearances for Holland’s most prestigious club sound? What about three beautiful goals and a play that saved his country in last year’s World Cup? What if this said player was just 23-years-old? That’s what Luis Suarez brings to the table — justifiably making him the world’s most sought-after commodity this transfer window. If Liverpool can swipe the clear top dog in the window, the new owners will be making a firm statement that the club is a player among the titans of world football. They’d also be creating a lethal partnership between Suarez and Fernando Torres. Signing Suarez has the potential to vault Liverpool back to the highest echelon of the sport. The best part is that it seems increasingly likely to be in the cards.

The only thing I can think of is that Warnock has been chosen ONLY as a short term option because of what we have and will only be cover for Johnson. It could be Coentrao is only available in the summer.

Konshitsky's LFC career is over. Fabio is constantly injured and will also be gone. Doesn't look like Kenny fancies him and Insua still at Gala, who could also be gone in the summer.

What would be your top 10 guesses sir?

Only think we're gonna sign 3 this month.

Well we're definitely after Suarez. Also looks like we're going after Adam instead of Young. Warnock looks nailed on.

Would like a winger like Hazard or Sanchez, but doesn't look like it's gonna happen.

We should be able to get Ashley Young a lot cheaper in the summer, providing he doesn't sign a new contract before then.

Agree with all of that, except for the harsh name. Looks like we could be losing three left backs pretty soon.
