I just heard an interesting one on QI. That when a plane is going down the Brace position is to save your teeth so you can be identified. If you suffer death which on most occasions is very likely. I found this interesting because if you think about it how is the brace position gonna have any affect on you chances of surviving. Does anyone else know any interesting Urban legends?

Dunno if that's true but it sounds logical. Airlines could save millions if they cut out all the safety crap. In 99.9% of cases, if a plane crashes, and I say crash as opposed to an emergency landing, then everyone on the plane is going to die. Little oxygen masks, life jackets and all the other bullshit including the slides from the doors and the little lights in the floor aren't going to save anyone. And it'd save the trolley dollies having to go through the whole safety routine which nobody listens to - and what would be the point?

I can imagine the airhostess' giving the same instructions before the flight but instead of giving the safety instructions, it would be....

That's not an urban legend though, that's actually true. It also holds your organs in.

 

The gas masks are there to make you high and happy whilst you're hurtling towards the earth. It also to do with assisting you if there's a drop in cabin pressure of course, but if you're going down, a nice bit of gas and air will do the trick nicely. Cheers.

My brother and sister once told me that to land they turn off the engines to drop then turn them on again when they touchdown so they can put the brakes on.

I think this came up before. It's total bolox. The brace position is to try and help you survive an emergeny landing, and the oxygen is in case of a cabin depressureisation. Both have saved many lives. Any other conversation is just urban legend tripe made up by some sad loner living in his basement.
