Preston North End are close to adding a second young Liverpool player to their squad this summer with striker Layton Stewart close to joining the Championship club according to reports.

Last month saw Calvin Ramsey head to Deepdale for a season-long loan which will hopefully provide the Scottish full-back some much needed regular time.

Now the Echo reports that they are also very keen on adding to their front line depth with the two clubs currently discussing a permanent deal but a loan is not out of the question.

The exciting progress of the academy graduate was cruelly halted in April 2021 when he suffered a cruciate ligament injury playing for the U23s.

A month later the spirits of Stewart were lifted when he signed a long-term deal with the club that he has been with since the age of seven.

The hard work that comes with rehabilitation after a serious injury paid dividends for the 20 year-old striker as he made his senior debut for the first team starting against Derby in the 3rd round Carabao Cup and also went to Dubai for the mid- season training camp in December.

In 18 appearances for the U21s in the 2022/3 season, Stewart scored 11 goals with one assist.

The current link between Liverpool and Preston who is managed by former Reds academy player Ryan Lowe also has seen Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg spend a season and a half on loan where he was highly regarded by coaching staff and fans alike.
