MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS ARE A VERY RELIABLE PAPER AND ARE REPORTING ANELKA TO LIVERPOOL

HEADING FOR THE EXIT DOOR?: Nicolas Anelka

NICOLAS Anelka could make a return to Merseyside in January as he figures high on Liverpool's list of targets to replace the injured Djibril Cisse.

City's £8m-rated top scorer, who infuriated Blues fans recently by suggesting that City are not a big club and repeating that he wants to be playing in the Champions League, was on loan at Libverpool from PSG prior to making a move to Manchester City.

Now influential Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has saluted the French star at a time when Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is poised to boost his strikeforce when the transfer window reopens next month.

Although the Spaniard has kept his own counsel on the identity of the man he needs, Anelka, 25, fits the bill as he is eligible to play in both the Champions League and the Carling Cup, where Liverpool will face Watford in the last four. Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes is also being monitored, but has been constantly linked with Monaco.

Desire

Gerrard, the ultra-ambitious England international who has himself been targeted by Chelsea and Arsenal, has made no secret of his desire to win more trophies and clearly feels Anelka could help him achieve his aim.

Anelka was a popular figure on Merseyside during the time he spent on loan in 2002 and the Liverpool skipper - still smarting from Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Everton - rates Anelka as one of the best strikers he has played with.

"I remember a few years ago when we were going for the title, Everton came to Anfield and nearly turned us over," said Gerrard. "We were grateful to Nicolas Anelka that day. He was great for us when he was here. He came up with an equaliser late in the game.

"He was on fire for us at that time. He is another one of the best strikers I have played with and he proved it that day."

It is no secret that City's board are open to offers for Anelka, who cost a club record £13m when he signed from PSG two years ago and received a mixed welcome from supporters when he came off the bench against Spurs on Saturday.

I have to admit, at the moment he looks like the best option out there. I'm not sure that he's the right player to link up with Baros, but as long as he gets us goals it'll be money well spent.

I share your concerns about the type of player needed. Anelka, Baros and Cisse are all very direct and rather selfish. I rate Anelka highly, but if possible i think we should rather try to bring someone in the Berkamp/Zola mould.

Dont think the need for a feeder type forward is there really...

Obviously it wouldnt hurt having one.

But with Alonso in midfield, and Gerrard in this more advanced attacking role he did so well in against Arsenal i think support for our front men is good enough.

Anelka would be quite perfect for us at the moment, he would be able to play for us in Europe.

How many strikers of his quality is there around not cup tied in the CL and available ?

I can't see an Anelka/Baros partnership working at all to be honest although if its feasible to get Nico back then i'm all for it.

It would certainly increase competition which is no bad thing. I think we are crying out for a link-man though. The Bergkamp type player to drop off and create problems.

Anelka would be brilliant with a strike partner like that as he showed years ago when actually playing with Bergkamp. If we are gonna be getting Nico in I hope it's on the premise that we bring in a link man as well otherwise we would just be overloading on a style of player we already have enough of.

Van Der Vaart and Anelka would be great buys

I remember when we played Newcastle at home, Anelka was awesome...simply awesome!

I agree...probably one of the best forward performances at anfield for a few years!...That night he was simply breathtaking...

And this claimed selfishness...We never saw that during his time with us!...Give them Diao and henchoz now, plus Diouf in the summer...that would be nice! ;)
