Doak does seem to be almost giving these players a bit too much respect at times. Always trying to square them up and get them to commit before making a move. Senior players will be canny to that, move the ball and get at them, earlier the better. Whip the ball in as well, stop looking for the perfect pass or waiting for a shooting chance to emerge, start showing the other forwards where you want them.

Working with the best in the world at this, but if it doesn't click for him this season some time in the Championship might be the catalyst to get that confidence.

When we beat them in December 2021 in the league cip on penalties, it was motly with a strong 2nd team, similar to last night. Unbelievably, only 3 of the starting 11, and 5 of the 16 that played that night, are in the squad this season.

The turnaround of players in the past two years has been very good. We have spent approx £175m net and have brought in the four midfielders this summer, the three attackers Diaz, Nunez, Gakpo (with Ramsay, Carvalho and Doak).

The average age has also dropped considerably. Last season's 0-0 draw v Palace was the oldest team fielded by Liverpool since the 50s (average age 29.9 years old).

The average of the 22 players that have started this season is 25.6 years old and the average age of the team that started v West Ham is 27.

Let's hope the defensive change is as successful.
