Is there a bigger example of this than academia? Quite a few of our lecturers were drunken wrecks who'd worked in industry briefly and then found a cushy number teaching. Most of them are still there and still have a shit rep. It's amazing.

When you go through a few lecturers' backgrounds on linkedin it's pretty mindblowing. You'd expect them  to have done some pretty impressive stuff but quite often they haven't.

I believe the saying is "Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach."

Every cunting IT Project manager seemingly. I've only ever met one decent on and he was previously a mechanic and therefore was not brought up on corporate wank speak.

Agree with that.  I've got rid of 5 in the last 8 months, for different reasons, but they were all less than competent in one way or another.  It's harder to find decent PMs than it was 10 years ago.

I've seen both sides re PMs

The worst are the non-technical ones who seemingly glorify in the fact they haven't got a fucking clue about any of the technical side... I don't need to know that I just manage people... Fuck off!!

On the other side you're given a goal and resources and it quickly becomes obvious that there isn't a chance in hell that you can do it on time... you tell them this and they say something like, "just don't do any testing, it'll be alright"... no it won't you fucking moron

I've come across a few in my time,

The thing I tend to notice is that a lot of those who I consider poor in upper echelons cover themselves in situations where they don't understand what is happening by resorting to tautology. Having people repeating what you've just explained to them as if they are giving actions is seriously fucking irritating. I tend to think that bullying/digs at staff are a definite indication of insecurity as well.

I would agree with some that you don't need to be exceptionally bright to be in some senior positions more just driven, and invariably people who understand the context and who have been around for a while (if not too jaded/part of the furniture) tend to be the most effective.

Regarding the poor grammar/spelling from those higher up the chain in correspondence that's often indicative of time pressure (i.e. that they don't bother to check as it would be a waste of time).
