BBC Sport - Football - Fifa scraps plans for 'home-grown' player rule

Fifa has said it will scrap plans for a minimum of six "home-grown" players in clubs' starting line-ups.

The so-called "6+5" rule had been expected to be brought in by 2012 but has now been abandoned.

Football's world governing body, at its congress in South Africa ahead of the World Cup kick-off, said it will now look at "other eligibility" options.

BBC Sport understands the European Commission said such a proposal would contravene EU labour laws.

From next season, the Premier League will bring in a system where there must be eight home-grown players in squad of 25.

This sort of change of direction is poor form. Clubs may have been assembling their squads taking the 6+5 thing into consideration, no doubt with large financial costs associated. Now it all changes, at the drop of a hat, before ever being implemented.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a poor rule anyway, but going about your business like this demonstrates the poor leadership that exists in the upper echelons of the game.

Sorry but there's a massive misconception here. No club in Europe was working towards the 6 + 5 quota for the simple reason, everyone knew FIFA didnt have a cat in hells chance of this getting past the EU free market regulations.

Blatter was told quite clearly his proposal failed the EU regulations but he decided to press on in the belief he could get it past the EU. He was totally deluded.

So it wasnt even a question of anything changing nor being binned at the drop of a hat.
