Despite being a regular in Dunga's Brazil squad, the 21-year-old has yet to establish himself in the Liverpool first team.

However, with qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League already secure, Lucas is expected to feature in Eindhoven as the Reds look to clinch top spot in Group D.

The Brazilian will hope to silence those critics who made themselves heard during Liverpool's goalless draw with Fulham last month.

Benitez said: "Lucas has shown he is a clever player with great character, he can understand why the fans were anxious with him that evening.

"I didn't like it and think we should support our players in every game. That's the way to progress, and the fans know that will be the way in the future.

"The main thing with the Liverpool fans is they support the team and the players. If the players work hard then they will always be behind them.

"Lucas has to compete with Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard in central midfield. The other players are playing too many games in a row so this is a good opportunity for him.

"Some of the other players will clearly have a chance. We have qualified and we want to manage with this game."

more hollow words regarding this player, I'd like to see some bone crunching tackles, some quality passing, and a willingness to get forward and get some goals from lucas.

You know what, I don't even want him to score ANY goals. I just want to see him put himself about, in the faces of the opposition, and when he has the ball, instead of trying to make a 5 yard pass, try and make an ambitious pass. And try not to look like a lazy arse.

Sissoko was never good at passing the ball but loads liked him because he was always at the opposition's faces and wasn't afraid to tackle. And he literally ran the whole 90 mins.

Lucas does nothing. He doesn't tackle and when he gets the ball, he always takes the safest possible option. He will never cut it like that at LFC.

I know i am gonna get negged but who the fuck cares. I agree with Rafa he will get allot better than he is he just needs some backing from the fans. He is always an escape goat but i think he is a player that should be loaned out to a decent team where he will get games same with babel going back to Ajax on loan could be great for him. We have a few players that should be getting first team games or they wont progress. and this will stop them from ever becoming good enough for a team like ours. My bigest fear is that nemeth will be left rotting in the reserves and will be nothing in a few years. A loan would benifit him aswell.

The ambitious pass he will still get slated for if it doesnt work. He is a scapegoat. No matter what he does it wont be good enough.

When Gerrard aims to make those "ambitious" passes, lots of times it doesn't come off. I don't hear the crowd groaning.

The point I was trying to make is, we already have a player to win the ball and make that 5 yard pass - in Mascherano. We don't need Lucas to do the same thing.

That is my point. Lucas is the scapegoat. If he made 5 long passes and the first four went right, but the 5th one didnt, he would get booed.
